  • Oil on Clutch Disk?

On the way back from Carlisle, at certain points my clutch would slip. I noticed it while on the highway in 5th gear. However, it does it intermittenly. Last night it did it in 4th gear. So, to try to get it to do it again, I was a stop sign and did an aggressive start. However, it grabbed and went. There doesn't seem to be a specific condition for it that I've found yet. I'm wondering if an oil leak that I can't seem to get rid of at the back of the VC has made its way onto the clutch disk. If so, is it ruined? Or when I finally figure out the oil leak will it 'dry out?' FWIW, I've already replaced the VC gasket with one of those 'reinforced' ones from Forced4.

I would count on a clutch as well. My last clutch did the same thing. it would slip intermittantly. Then a few weeks later I started to get the sick burning smell.

I believe the clutch was almost new we I got the car an has probably ~3k on it and its a stock drivetrain.

So, oil can get into/onto the clutch disc with an oil leak?

Might check your clutch adjustment. I disabled my self adjuster because I wanted to have higher engagement. I forgot about it and the clutch started to slip in 5th 2-3 years later. I reset it and it was fine after that.

What's a recommended replacement for a car that sees HPDEs? Is OEM sufficient?

If you are budget conscience, then yes, OEM should be sufficient for HPDE events. It isn't like you are slipping the clutch like on a 1/4 mile strip, so the clutch wear should be limited.

If you have room in your budget, you may want to consider upgrading. I dropped in an aluminum flywheel and Stage II clutch unit from Spec a few years ago. It has performed flawlessly at the HPDE's that I have attended.
