Is the shifter lever different from '84-86? I would like to keep the stock look, but the throw on my '84 seems long. I was thinking about replacing the whole shifter with the older Hurst (stock look) with the adjustable stops and using SVO boot and Motorsport knob. If the later model lever is shorter, I might just do that. I would like to put a CD player in it and I think the '84 lever will be in the way.
I am pretty sure the stock shifter for an 84 does have long throws. I don't think they started putting Hurst Short throw shifters into SVOs until the 85 models.
Personally, I would replace the shifter with a short throw shifter (Triax, Kirban, Pro 5.0, b&m ripper, etc) and then keep the stock shifter in case you ever want to go back. I use the steeda triax short throw shifter - it was a great improvement over my stock hurst short throw.
I dont know if this really answers your question....by shifter lever you mean handle???
you shouldnt have any problems if you put in any of the aforementioned shifters as far as getting cds in and out of a cd player.
I have a stock shifter in my 84 svo and it has a CD player and I have no problems with interference.Btw I thought the length of the throw was more or less due to the tranny?I can see were a shorter lever would help alittle or I'm I incorrect.
i have one i am trying to sell if youre interested in it at all. i love the shifter but have no use for it as i'm selling the cobra and am putting stock stuff back on it. it has less than 5k miles on it and fits fine on svo's. PM me for some more info if interested. (and im not just trying to push this on you, the tri-ax offers a huge improvement over stock. huge.)
Does anyone know the thread size on the 86 stock shifter. I would like to replace the shift knob (that came on my car - not stock) with a different one. Its some goofy looking Momo - IMHO. Anyway, the Momo doesn't have threads - so I can't get the thread size from it. Any help is appreciated - Thanks
The thread size for the original Hurst handle is 12mm x 1.50 pitch.
The 84 vs. the 85 is a world of difference, and the 85.5 seems even tighter. By what I see if they had made an 87 SVO, you'd only have to look over at it cross eyed to make it shift gears.

Thanks for the reply - I can't believe I couldn't find it myself with all the places I've look. I knew I was in trouble when the person at the speed shop told me that late-model cars are usually the only ones to have metric shift levers. Well, instead of arguing with them by trying to accredit SVP and Bud's knowledge of SVOs - I said, "I thought my car was a late-model" :p
The thread pitch numbers were correct, and that Ford Motorsports shifter has been installed on SVO's before with no problems. I believe that the threaded insert in the knob is made of nylon, which will conform to the 12 x 1.50 SVO threads and sort of "tap itself" on to the different thread pitch.
Please note that Bob Tweedy supplies paid members here with restored SVO shift knobs that look absolutely perfect, with the HURST logo.
