  • Need help!!! My RPMS go up and down

Im a newbie and Ive used the search button to try and find a smiliar case like mine and I have yet to come across it... Even though Im posting I will continue to search for something close to my problem...

I have an 84 all stock I didnt drive the car very often because the clutch was slipping so this weekend I had the clutch replaced and now when I drive it my RPMs go crazy at a stop light not moving my RPM read 8k i know the engine isnt at that but my guage is reading that... while driving in 4th gear about 3k rpms the needle will start to bounce around up to about 4k. and once I slow down to turn the car will boggle down and every now and then back fire... The car has only turned of on me once since then and i was going around 35mps shifting into 3rd... Have any of you had this problem? I never had this problem before changing the clutch, could that have anything to do with it?

I was thinking timing or misfire but i have not messed with that nor did the place I took the car to get the clutch replaced messed with anything else......

I know this may not be the forum where to post this problem but by changing somethign with the drive line is where my problem first started so i figured Id post here....

thanks in advance for any help...

Check the wiring and connector on the TFI. I didn't plug mine in all the way one time and it did as you describe.

Thnaks I checked the TFI and it was plugged in correctly but i came to find out that insulation on the pigtail wires are gone and the bare wires were touching... I taped them up and started the car and the car idels fine... Im going to order the tfi pig tail tonight... Thanks once again...

The fact that you have an 84 means you should pay very close attention to your exposed wiring. The 84's have a bad habit of 'shedding' their insulation. Good luck.
