  • Pinion snubber

Installing new springs, Eibach sportline and they came with a new pinion snubber, looked up at the floorpan and no bracket. Is this typical of svo's or just mine, not a problem still available so the car sits another couple of days but just wondering? It also appears to be an easy bracket to mount. I guess time will tell.

Mine didn't have one either when the prolines went on. That was in '97.

      Nothing on my 85

I got a nice blue urethane part with my H&R springs but couldn't see anyplace where it went, I would guess this is common, but do not recall seeing anything specific about the topic as I searched for tips regarding common installation and tips. Seems to be just fine without it!

None of my SVOs had a pinion snubber from the factory. I went to the junk yard and pulled the bracket and snubber from a 5.0 car.

Be careful with those. They can make their way inside the car. Had a friend with a 2nd Gen Canary, 402 big block auto. Pinion snubber was great fun, helped the car hook GREAT up until the point it punched a hole in the floorboard. I'm not sure a Fox has the reinforcement for one, either. If not, use it only when at the track, and not on the street. The less you use it, the better. They work killer, though, when set right.

If you are going to install one, you need to get the metal bracket that it bolts on to. I bought my SVO new and it didn't have one either.

We just got a metal pinion snubber bracket off a '97 GT and it bolted right to the floor of our '88 LX 2.3 car. Just thought I would mention because those GTs are showing up in the junk yards a lot and most of them still have the brackets in place.

Just put lowering springs on the Trash car and installed the new bump stops on the front (CC plates), then went looking for the pinion snubber for the rear--guess what?, no pinion snubber. Looks like our cars had the bump stops mounted just inside of the wheel wells on the chassis, one on each side to bump against the axle tubes. I guess I'm not replacing those, or I need to switch to the later style pinion snubber bump stop.

I wonder if the pinion snubber was left off our cars because the lower trailing arms had the round bushings in the front of the lower trailing arms rather than the ovals used on the 'normal' Mustangs of the era?? Our round bushings deflect less and probably did better at limiting the rotation of the axle wind-up better than the flubbery oval bushings. Just thinking out loud.

The pinion snubber is not for buttoming out. It is for when the axle winds up under torque it keeps the axle from twisting too far and aids in traction. Especially on the V8 cars with the oval front bushings.

I only mentioned that the snubber off the '97 GT bolts to a fox body in case anyone wanted to add one. I already knew SVOs don't come with one. And if you do want to add one get the bracket off the differential so the snubber has the correct surface to contact.
