  • Under Hood insulation

    Got a question...

Are there any disadvantages, besides maybe engine noise, in removing the insulation from under the hood Mine is fairly worn and has some small tears - I was thinking about removing it to give it a nice clean look. But if it actually has some kind of functionailty - I'll keep it there

    Thanks

It also protects the paint on your hood from heat damage.

That's really my question. How much does it protect against heat? The backside of the fenders still have paint on them... I was just curious. Has anyone removed theirs? I saw a picture of an SVO on this forum where I noticed it was removed - but it could have been just for show.

        Intercooler seal?

I've never removed mine but does the intercooler seal tie in to the insulation or is there just some kind of trim ring to hold up the insulation?

I replaced mine with foil-backed bubble insulation. Works well. As for how much protection, who knows. I used to have an 84 with no hood insulation at all and the area around the hood scope was noticeably faded from the turbo's heat.

Ken - I noticed that the seal doesn't tie to the insulation. It looks like it just tucks behind it.

Majestic - Where did you get your foil-backed bubble insulation from. and how much $$ if you don't mind me asking. Sorry to hear about your 84 - fading paint is what I'd like to stay away from.

            Thanks for the help!

It comes in rolls at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc for about $10-$15. Look in the section where they carry insulation products. I don't have the faded 84 anymore. I'm down to just one (non-faded) SVO, now.

Man - I was just at Lowes yesterday looking for those plastic rivets (one was missing). I'll go again an pick some up. Thanks again for your advice and solution. I hoping with a little elbow grease and small fix-its - I'll have one cherry SVO too

You can buy industrial grade aluminized insulation from McMaster-Carr at www.mcmaster.com. The part # is: 88475K14. They also have the heat resistant ceramic or Nomex woven sleeves to protect wires and tubes from the heat.

                    Another purpose...

The under hood insulators from Ford are designed with one more purpose.

If there's an under hood fire, the plastic rivets thet hold the insulator in place melt, and the fireproof insulator drops down to help smother the fire.

Next trip to the wrecking yard, take a look at a few burn jobs.

I've been running my 9L for over 5 years now without an underhood pad or any type of "insulation" material on the hood .. and without any ill effects. The car was repainted just prior to me owning .. and still shines like new.

As most of you know .. when I drive this car, I drive the piss out of it. From long hwy trips in the middle of the summer at 80mph to 8 hrs worth of Open Track at 'Dega averaging 4-5k rpms steady ..

I know of quite of few who haven't had one on their cars in years either .. so, they may not have had much to do in the way of 'heat protection' for the paint .. just a sound deadener.

Some of he fading may be attributed to the quality of the paint job. I'm running without insulation now, because, with the new paint job, the underside of the hood looks as good as the top side! It'd be a shame to cover it up!
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

Has anyone here taken a insulator for regular mustang and made it fit?

my svo has been without hood insulation since I got it..no problems..

I have seriously considered doing what you are saying Lon -- but just havn't got around to it yet.
