  • dual exhaust...1 muffler or 2?

On the car I *think* I'm going to buy, it has the stock exhaust ('86) except it has no mufflers. What are the advanatages/disadvantages of using 1 dual-outlet muffler as opposed to 2 single-outlet mufflers? If I decide to make the exhaust a single 3" in the future, would it be good/bad to take an existing dual-outlet muffler and put a y-pipe after the muffler to make it single again? I know it sounds kind of ghetto, but I don't know why it wouldn't work out.

BTW, the SVO doesn't sound too bad without mufflers. It's not as loud as I expected, but it kind of sounds like a tractor so I want to at least quiet it down some. Plus, I'm not sure if the car will need to be inspected or not, and if inspection requires mufflers...

I think the problem you would have with a dual output muffler would be location and fitment. I under stand the MAC make a nice 3" single exhaust system. This would be the ideal solution, cost & weight consideration, for the SVO using a 3" downpipe and 3" high flow cat if needed.

If you want to maintain the stock look, there are mandrel bent tail pipes and muffles off the shelf that will fit the SVO. The snag is the Y-pipe which is only avaible in stock form which means crushed bent tubing. You could have a specialty muffler shop make you one of 2 1/2" tubing and use off the shelf 2 1/2 muffler and tail pipes, or you could buy the stainless steel 2 1/2" setup from ATR.

i have the original mufflers off my 86 if interested.

I would use a 3" dynomax and run a single 3" exhaust. they flow better than flowmaster and mac and sounds pretty good.

        3 inch mufflers

If you look into at a 3 inch muffler, make sure to look and measure the minimum I.D to which the inlet and out truly neck down. Many of these popular "3 inch" performance mufflers neck down to 2 1/2" inside the case.
