  • Indiana Dave's winter projects

Well, I've made a late ( or early, whichever way you look at it) new years resolution. I'm going to make time for my car, and do everything I've been putting off, or not finding time to do since having kids. It really started about a month ago with the aux. shaft issue, and trying to get ready for the Reunion.
Getting the aux. shaft and dizzy gear replaced and getting the engine back in wasn't really part of the plan.
It started with finally getting the headliner in after like 8 years without one, and doing some serious tweaking on the exhaust trying to rid my car of the rattles. I didn't fully succed in that. The 3" pipe just won't fit over the axle without hitting the frame, or the gas tank. It also hangs low enough that speedbumps are an issue. might come up with something else for an exhaust. That's officially not on the list yet though.
    In no particular order
    Interior:
Finish headliner install. Missing bracket for map light, and a clip for the visor. Might also get it redone with the correct color fabric. It's a little lighter than original.
Get worn bolster on drivers seat repaired.
Install new seatbelt plastic sleeves I've had forever to replace the disentrigrated ones that aren't even there anymore.
    Body work:
Replace cowl., or at least the hinge area. This is the biggie. My passenger side hood hinge is rusted, and needs fixed badly. Only rust in the whole car.
Touch up all the nicks, flakes, and defects in the paint. Not looking for show quality, but want it better than it is.
Fix front bumper cover where it snagged the tow dolly a couple years ago, and Replace the rear bumper cover where my parking brake failed and it rolled into my wifes Jeep a few years ago.
    Mechanical:
Deal with the oil evac/PCV issue. Probably refinish valve cover while it's off, and tap a hole for a nipple where the seperator mounts.
Install a front mount intercooler. Whatever I can find a deal on. NPR, or maybe a same side outlet one like they use in the supercharged V8 cars.
Clean up wiring. Maybe hide some of it behind the inner fender aprons/shock towers and the firewall. There is an awesome thread on Corral.net on hiding wiring. I love the way they look when done right. Makes an awesome difference.
Reduce hose clutter. I want to reroute some hoses, and use formed hoses in some places. might also replace some with hard lines.
Detail and install serpentine setup i have in the attic, including the A/C and get the A/C working.
Get a new 3G that looks nicer. Maybe a powder-coated one. This junkyard one is just dirty, and no amount of cleaner has been able to get it looking decent.
    Get some nicer rims.
That's all I can think of right now. I'll get some before pictures.
I think seeing peoples comments about my progress, or lack of will keep me motivated and moving on it.
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

Good luck with that! This year, I've gotten absolutely nothing done on my cars (although I'm still spending money on them...) This year has been about getting house projects done. My kids need to get into their own bedrooms, so I'm finishing the basement to make a new play room and moving the master bedroom back downstairs. This will probably carry me into the new year. However, I'd like to continue to de-bug the 'Trash car, get the blue one into storage, resolve the exhaust leak on the Sage car, and get the convertible painted--not too much to ask for is it?
My wife says it's a sickness...what do you think?

Got a lot done so far. Ran some tube for the oil vapor return to the turbo. got my cam cover off, blasted, sanded and painted. Just needs some more polishing, and a coat of clear. I can't wait till it's done. It's gonna look sweet. I'll have to do some work on the rest of the engine to make it look as good as the cover.
Got my serpetine setup out and started comparing and making sure I got everything needed. I may need a new A/C compressor. This one seems to have some slop in the pulley. Then need to clean, blast and paint all of those parts before installing.
Found a local Do-It center that has a huge selection of chrome bolts... Hmmm...
I may wait and mess with the serpentine setup until after the last autocross of the year Nov. 2nd.

The only problem I've had with home center "chrome" stuff is it's usually not real great quality plating. When I lived in WV I found a local Mom and Pop hardware store where I got the tap to do the square intake on my old 84 had nice stainless, regular satin and polished. I got some variuos stuff to put on my Harley from them. The stuff they didn't have polished, I did myself.

Getting it back together temporarily. Want to run the last autocross this Sunday. Cam cover turned out great. Tried for a mirror finish, but the casting has too many irregularities. It's smooth and shiney, but kinda splotchy. Still looks way better. I'm working on all the serpentine brackets smoothing and polishing them. The intake will get the same treatment.
My only "bling" till now has been my billet FPR, and cam pulley. No more! Oh yea, Both of those are coming off for a polishing too!
You can also see my new tube from the turbo to the oil seperator. I inserted a tube into the old hole in the cover, and attached a short piece of hose. Basically did what they did with the early cars in the warranty service "upgrade".
I'm also rerouting some hoses, and debating on removing the oil cooler to eliminate some more hoses and clutter. Don't know if it's necessary with todays better oils.

Stage 1 is done. Seem to have solved the oil / PCV issue. Got the car over to a friends house so he could repair and paint my rusted firewall, and replace the rear bumper cover. He might touch up a couple other little areas also. Then when I get it back, I'll finish installing the polished serpentine set-up on it. Then out comes the fuel tank to finally fix the sender.

Got my car back today. Firewall looks great and is solid. My hood hinges are bent though from the old hood flying up. I've got spares to swap in. Jerry also touched up a few other nicks and spots. Car looks way better.
Next step. Replace rear bumper cover with newly painted one, replace hood hinges, and repair tears in front bumper cover from last years reunion tow dolley fiasco.
I'll post pictures of the repair tomorrow.

OK. Winter projects have turned into spring projects.. Finally got the tank down, and the plug for the fuel sender is toast. Used my blow gun to clean the remains from the area. Should've taken a pic of the pile of debri that was the plug. Sent an email to Forced4 on that. Hopefully my sender is good, and this is the only reason my gauge quit. Also got my exhaust off, and did some ovalizing near where it hits the framerail to finally hopefully get rid of the ratltle. Neeed to do some near corner of the tank also. Also degreased the whole system. My car has so much oil underneath, I need to get it to a high pressure car wash when it's back together.
I'm looking at the newly painted bumper cover, and debating on painting the rub strips charcoal gray (metallic" to match my trim. I'm definately painting the rocker trim.
It's intimidating thinking of sanding the strip down on the nice shiney new cover.
Might paint the rockers and bottom of the spats, and leave the bumper covers for my paint guy to do.
Was going to take pics, but it's nothing but old dirty parts at this time.

You can check it while you have the tank out.

Remove the sender and check the resistance with the float in the "empty" or down position, and then in the "full" or upwards position.

I can't remember which Ohms value is which (for full or empty), but in one position it is right at 73 Ohms, and the other is right at 11 Ohms.

Yanked off all the old V-belt stuff, amd was trying to piece together the serpentine setup. Got the pulleys sorted, but have too many brackets. Need to see some pics to know what goes where. Thinking of getting the pulleys chromed.... Hmmm
Found some pics online, and I have all the right brackets, but the small bracket for the alternator has a different mounting bolt pattern than my head has.
Anyone have any suggestions? Is there another bracket that will work to replace this one?
Does anyone know which newsletter the serpentine write-up is in?
Coudn't figure out how to use the multimeter to read the ohms, so stuck the sender back in the tank, and pushed the connectors on the posts. Turned key, and fuel gauge went up. Yea! The sender works!
Got a new (used) fuel tank harness coming from Forced4 Paypaled them at 7:27. Got a message saying package was on it's way at 7:31 with tracking #!!! How'd he do that!?
