  • Odd noise..

alright everyone, I'm stumped on this one. There is a moaning noise that seems to come from the front left of my car only starting from a dead stop..meaning, very low speed, never lasts long, and sounds like it's going with rotation..like rubbing. I thought a caliper was hanging or I had a warped rotor.

here's the thing, this sound has been present before and after I've replaced or done the following:
new calipers, new rotors, new pads, new tires, new bearings, rebuilt tranny, new clutch, new alum driveshaft, new springs, new struts, braided brake lines, wheel rotation..

it's definitely related to moving, as in, something turning/rubbing but I can't find out what the hek it is.

what the hek could this be?? any ideas?

I have time this weekend to look deeper so that's why I'm asking..

First thing to do is to swap front tires left to right. Also inspect both tires.

Since you installed new rotors I would think you repacked the grease. I know you did.

Could be a bad wheel bearing. Go back and check if spindle nut is snug - I recheck those after driving the first 50 miles.

After driving feel if the dust cap is warm or hot.

thanks brad, as I mentioned above; I've actually already done a tire rotation and replaced wheel bearings as I thought it was something along those lines.

I went to a buddies today and we spent a lot of time on the front suspension and found nothing. we drove it around the block several times and heard the sound twice. After scratching our heads and moving on to his SVO, I had sat in my car to do something and I heard the sound. I stopped what I was doing and yelled at my buddy...he came out and I rocked the car back and forth and the sound was LOUD...finally, someone else heard it.

it was the drivers side rear rotor. we put his indicator on the rotor and it's warped about 15 thousandths..and you can feel when it hits the caliper/pad as it will get tight. In the car you would swear it's coming from the front of the car.

so..good day for fixes. fixed his timing belt/tensioner/oil leak, and found the source of my sound.

I'm glad that you found it. I was about to post some useless information about "Even noises", as I have some experience there. Luckily I did not make a fool of myself since I have no knowledge of "Odd noises".
