Has anyone ever had a problem with the clutch packs in the rear?? If so what happened and did it make any noises??
I have clunking sound when I leave off the gas and especially going down a hill. I am thinking the clutch packs could be worn badly. I changed the fluid and added friction modifier. When I drained the old gear oil I did not get any smell of friction modifier. Has anyone ever used any that did not smell so awful?

I also noticed the d.s. axle shaft seemed to move in and out what seemed like an 1/8". I hate to think about the problem that could be. Could that be the noise I am hearing,(the shaft moving in and out)?

clutch packs make noise when you're turning. u-joint / pinon gear backlash / axle backlash / gear wear makes noise when you get on and off the gas.

you can test the clutch packs by jacking up the rear end, putting the car in gear, and try to rotate one of the tires. not sure whats the acceptable yield torque between the 2 axles is; should be fairly hard to turn.

sounds like you're gonna need to slightly shim the c-clips for that axel. use the search for instructions. might as well freshen up the clutches while you're in there.

did you check for chips on the ring and pinion? when I did mine, it didn't smell that bad either. as for the axle going in and out, mine would move about a 1/4" my rind and pinion had many chips and the bearings were shot. I had to use axle savers on mine when it was rebuilt.

The Trash car does the same thing, I thought driveshaft u-joints first, but after rebuilding that, it still makes that noise. I'm thinking its time for a rebuild, or a 8.8.
My wife says it's a sickness...what do you think?

This is a 8.8 now so I guess I'll have to rebuild or replace. I haven't decided yet.

Rebuild that 8.8, Parts are plentiful and don't cost much. If your gonna do it yourself, be sure to set that pinion depth correctly or the gears will wear quickly. If in doubt, have a shop do it for you.

shipping a diff unit cross country might turn out to be more expensive then just having the local rear end guy do it. especially if its just improper pinon lash. you're going to need the same parts (8.8 rebuild kit, crush collar, gear paint, clutches etc etc) to put a new diff in vs rebuilding whats in there.

oh, a _fresh_ trac-loc. i thought you put the torson in due to the trac-loc being worn out.

yeah, id jump on a low usage diff if it was offered to me.

Mike, thanks for the offer. I'll keep it under consideration. I'm really not even close to being ready yet to do anything. I'm just trying to get some ideas from you guys. I havent checked anything real close yet such as gear lash and such.
