  • speedo cable, steering rack AND glue questions

I have a few things I need to take care of over the long weekend.
One is the speedometer cable, the white ring on the cable is broken and won't stay plugged in.

Autozone came up with part # CA3012.
I saw in a post where part # CA3011 was recommended.
The part would be delivered to the store tomorrow, I just want to be able to pick the correct part up.
Can anyone please confirm which one will work? (CA3011 or CA3012)
Also, do I need to purchase a new gear for it, or can I swap the old gear out?

Also, the gauge cluster wiring, kind of like foil on plastic sheet, where the plugs snap into the back of the cluster is loose. Has anyone tried gluing this down? IF so, what glue would work and hopefully not cause the wiring or
    plastic to deteriorate?

Sorry for such a long post. Thanks, in advance.
    Pat

The black bulb holder sockets lose their tension on the copper contact points after multiple tinkerings. Sometimes the little locating tabs break off. Try a few new black socket holders and see if that fixes the dash light problem.

Thanks for the reply Pat. I do have one light socket that you described that is loose, where would one find a replacement?

My problem is with the wiring on back of the gauge cluster that is formed kind of like a circuit board. There is a large rectangular plug that goes right between the speedo and tach that has some of the wiring that is not glued to the cluster anymore. When I plugged in the socket, I am not sure it held down all the wires. A couple lights, (left turn signal and high beam indicator) don't illuminate and I was wondering if it was caused by the wiring.
I will probably replace all the bulbs when I pull the gauge cluster for speedo cable replacement.

On the speedo cable topic, any info on which one I should purchase? The CA3012 is 80" long and CA3011 is 76" or 78" (I can't remember which).

The speedo gear, should I buy a new one also?

        speedo replace tip

I purchased the CA3011 cable and it was a direct replacement for the original. This was not an easy swap though. Just trying to get the end of the cable through the firewall grommet proved seriously difficult.
Here is a tip that would make it an easier swap.

Duct tape the new cable (Gear end w/out gear attached) to the cable in the dash. The gear end of the new cable will slip right inside the end of the old cable that attaches to the gauge cluster. There is a mount plate on the gear end of the new cable, slide it down a few inches and tape it to the side of the cable housing so it will slide through the grommet. Apply some silicone spray or WD-40 to the grommet and pull the old cable out through the firewall (engine bay side) and the new cable will get fed through with it.

I also swapped the gear from the old cable to the new one, it was in excellent condition. One thing you will need is a new o'ring for the new cable. My new cable did not come with an o'ring for the gear end where it mounts inside the trans.
