  • Any Hope for a Stock SVO Bearing Retainer?

When I did the clutch a couple years ago, the retainer didn't look all that good. Now recently, the cluch is very hard to press (and have broken the clutch cable again) and I'm positive the retainer has gotten worse. Called Hanlon and D&D, they both told me I was SOL, even though they get the exact same call about once a month.

Guess I could go with a V8 T5, but I really don't want to junk a good transmission only because I couldn't get a retainer for it.

Anybody know of anyone making 'one offs' or a supply of NOS units? Thanks.

NWC ones you can't get a new retainer for AFAIK. Alum or steel... Went through this on my 93 DD... You should be able to get one for the 86. (judging by your screen name) Mike Ray had a shop by him custom do one for his 84.

From what Hanlon told me on the phone (about a year ago), the only thing that would FUBAR the trans is if the input shaft required replacement on a NWC with a 4.03 First gear.

I have the stock T5 that came with the car. I was under the impression that the input shaft was a different diameter specifically to the SVO from other 4cyl T5's?

When I asked both vendors about a bearing retainer for an 86 SVO, I'm assuming they knew what box is stock in an SVO. I guess that's why they suggested putting a V8 T5 in and grind down the shaft.

I must be missing something here...sorry if I'm a little thick headed....

er.. that makes my head hurt. so the SVO WC in 85, 86 are essentially V8 WC boxes with a different input shaft pilot bearing, and NA I4 WC gearboxes use a different input shaft diameter? is that why the later model NA I4 WC gearboxes are listed at a lower load capacity then SVO WC T5s?

so for the OP, it just needs a WC T5 bearing retainer that is available pretty much anywhere?

No, you need a a V-8 WC T-5 Bearing retainer.

There is a V-6 WC T-5 as well, but the B.R. is different than the V-8 one (according to the Hanlon website).

One other thing that you will need to look at is the fork. I had a similar problem on my 86 and it turned out that I had pushed the pivot bolt through a split fork.

On an other not, I have a low mileage (37K) original bearing retainer that doesn't appear to be worn at all if you wanted to go that route.

Don't be suprised if you go through all the work to change the retainer and still have the problem of a stiff clutch pedal if you don't change the pressure plate ! I find HEAT is the enemy and common problem with stiff clutch.

Ok, I went back to Bob Hanlon on the 4th with an email to ask him to clarify the V-8 retainer provision. I just got the answer back today:

                        QUOTE

if the retainer has a casting marking of 908 then you can put on a steel V-8 retainer if it has a 919 then there is none available

just rebuilt my t-5 out of my 86 svo box tag #116. i purchased my bearing retainer from summit racing part#fms-m-7050-a worked perfectly. now if you are going to replace it you will also need a shim kit. i bought that from hanlon. if you are not real sure what you are doing take my advice and buy the trans rebuild video from hanlon before doing anything once you watch it yoouwill understand what you are doing ( best money i ever spent excellent video)

why buy the retainer from summit, and the rest from hanlon ?
as long as he knows you have a SVO, he can sell you the right bearing retainer.
