  • 7.5 Trac-Lok question

Well, I wore out the search function for this question first. I disassembled the rear end yesterday to find that mine is equipped with the cone-style differential. I'm going to freshen it up with new bearings and the solid replacement for the crush washer/collar. My question is; is there a different kit that needs to be ordered; or will the kit for the Integeral carrier ("S" spring/clutch type) work for a cone type rebuild? I would think there is a difference but when you look at most places to get parts online, they don't list any different kit numbers. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Not interested in an 8.8 conversion as the car will remain near stock. (Just heading that off.)

    Thanks!

I would see if you can have a local shop 'freshen' it up for you, as I have been told that the cone type diffs are more durable than the plate types, but they are limited to how many times they can be freshened up.

I had put a 7.5 cone type diff in my old 80 4-cyl Mustang back in the day. It came from my buddy's 84.5 GT when he upgraded to an 8.8. I had it 'freshened' up by a local drivetrain shop before I installed it with a new set of gears. The guy at the shop stated that he hadn't seen a cone type Ford unit, but it looked somewhat similar to the Auburn's he had worked on. No clutches/plates to replace, just the male and female cone. The female cone was just a smooth sided cone, but the male side had a raised spiral rib that was ~1-2" wide and ~.060" high. My unit's rib was down to about .040", so he cut the relief .020" deeper to bring the rib height back up to .060", which his book showed as the factory depth. He shimmed the unit to bring the cone pre-load back into spec as well. Mind you, this was almost 20 years ago, so don't blame me if my dimensions aren't spot on. It laid down nice posi stripes for the 6 years I had the car, so I guess he knew what he was doing. Good luck with your project.

        Thanks for the info, Ted.

Here's what I have found out. I spoke with a guy at National Drivetrain today... actually about 5 minute ago. The bearing kit is the same and the solid replacement for the crush washer is the same. Other than that, everything else is different. That is what I figured from the beginning. Actually, I thought the bearing kit might be different too as the pics I've seen showed clutches. All the rest of the items have to be ordered from Auburn.

I think I'm going to get everything as I only want to do this once. Well, not really even once, but it is what it is. I'll post part numbers once I am done. No too terrible. It's about $340 for everything excluding ring/pinion and the differential housing.
