are all hatch struts created equal?

I need some hatch struts for my new SVO. Are there any particular brands/vendors I should look for or avoid? Seems like everybody has them for sale but never with any info. If Paul gets up and running again I might buy from him but I'd like to be an educated buyer, even for something as trivial as this.

Any tips for installation? I figured you just have to prop the hatch up with something and bolt it right in.

You can get replacements from most auto parts stores. Just prop up the hatch. Use something that you can secure, the hatch is pretty heavy and you don't want your new SVO knocking you out.

If I remember correctly, it has been awhile since I replaced 'em, you may have to take off the mounting bracket that attaches to the body to get them off. It's been awhile so don't quote me on that.

all I remember using was a screwdriver to pop them off the ball that they ride on.

BTW:: Last time I talked to Paul, he was taking orders again ..but still cleaning up some stuff....

Actually most of them have a retaining clip that goes around the point where it mates to the ball. Just remove the clip, and pull up and they should come right off.

Ford used to list 2 applications. One with a spoiler and one without. Since every hatch back since 86 had a spoiler, they might only have one listed now. If there is a listing for one with louvers and a spoiler, go with that. Ford was very pricey many years ago. Like $40 each.
