  • Front Suspension Noises

My front end has recently been emitting thumping noises, especially during cold weather. Are the struts going bad, or could something else be causing the noise? The struts still seem to dampen pretty well, but I have also noticed a little more suspension reverb through the steering wheel as of late. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

check the wheel balance or maybe a flat spot on one or more of the tires...I've had the tires go "square" if they've sat around for awhile in the same spot...

      thud

My 86 has sounds as if bottoming out only on the left front. new konis and the springs check out too. I cant figure it out. I am suspecting it is the aluminum bussings the prevoius owner put in.
It is a bit terrifying when I hit a good bump. It sounds as if my left front is going to let go.
      any help would be hot

Interesting --- My 86 has the same thump when you hit a bump, and on the left (drivers) side too --

Last month I took the entire left side suspension off to check everything, and could find no problems -- The only think I can think of is it is something else that is loose, (possibly something I dropped inside the fender??)

It's always fun chasing down those noises (can you hear my sarchasm )

My Koni's used to do the same thing when it was cold. I ended up putting Tokicos on it.

My guess too ... it's the front struts ...

do a visual inspection for wetness .. which may look like a dark oily looking grime.

in my case, the koni's are new, and not damp ...

just put on caster/camber plates, and re-lubed all the poly bushings when I put it back together... So unless there is something physically wrong with the strut (i couldn't find anything) my noise is coming from elsewhere...

                Onion Heads

Any chance the onion heads are getting worn. Eric in your case the C&C plates replace the onion head dont they?

Yep -- the noise was one of the reasons I put the C&C plates on -- that and a slight problem with alignments

Are you sure it is the suspension? Have you removed and replaced your IC, or perhaps installed a Turbo Coupe IC? Those things are sometimes hard to get adjusted right so they don't hit anything.

                      took a look

I just got home and took a look at mine today. I have new Konis 4k on them. Caster camber plates 24k on them. I did however notice my sway bar end link bushings are dry rotted. this may explain my issue. I will have to give paul a a call and see what he has available.
