  • What other taillights will bolt in?

Got an 84 SVO and have had several complaints that my tail / brake lights are too dim to be seen clearly. I'm guessing that the reflective material in the lenses has oxidized and is no longer very reflective. The naked bulbs are nice and bright. I am aware that the original taillight assembly is no longer available so I'm looking to find a bolt in replacement. Anybody have out there know? I plan on cleaning up the originals and putting them away.

    84-93

Any 84 to 93 tailight as far as I know. No actual experience but I have seen SVO's with LX tailights and the 93 Cobra used SVO tailights.

      84-93?

As far as I know, any fox body Mustang light would work...79-93?
The only differences MIGHT be in the wiring from one version to another...That's my best guess. I would get some LX tail lights, put the stripes on and move on...but that's just me

IIRC, standard 83-86 lights are the same as SVO minus the stripes. Less common than LX lights (i.e. not played out) and they are closer to the originals, and you can stripe them to make them look like originals.

          79-82

          Rich,

I should have listed it as 83-93. I left out the 79-82 because I new they were definately a different style. I figured they would work but I new they were shorter in width.

Thanks for all the input! I'll be on the lookout for some replacement taillights. Do all 83-93 Mustangs have seperate turn and stop lights? Has anybody else had a complaint about he brake lights being too dim? Anybody have a pair of good condition taillights they would like to sell?

They are, mine has them on it and I didn't even notice until I got it home.

                Dim Tailights

                RK,

Never heard that complaint. Heard it and seen it about 85.5/86 headlights (yellowing causing the dimness) but not taillights

Now this might sound kind of "rural", but I put aluminum foil, shiny side out on the inside of the housing around the bulb. It helped alot with the brightness.

                    Taillights

Eastwood sells a couple of kits to paint or repair reflective surfaces on lights. By the way they also sell kits to restore discolored lights blinkers etc. I haven't tried them, no need to yet, but I did see them in their catalog.

A new or upgraded alternator may help too. Try turing on your signal lights at night and watch the entire dash dim with every blink... then wind up the window and see them get even dimmer.

I don't know why Ford used such a punny alt in these cars considering how things can get at wot with timing.
