  • can you recommend a good car cover?

My SVO is going to be sitting at my parents' house for 2-5 weeks, outside. Hopefully my dad will drive it, because we are both co-owners of the car. Anyway, he mentioned getting a cover for it, and I don't know what kind to get. Does the car have to be spotless before putting the cover on? I washed it yesterday and I can already see dust on it. I'm worried about any dirt scratching the paint when covering the car. Are covers made specifically for outdoor or indoor storage? How about covers made specifically for each model? Any clearance issues with the big SVO wing? Excuse the car cover ignorance here, this is my first vehicle that's not a daily driver.

A garage should be built at my parents' house in time for winter hibernation

    Evoulution 4

If you want a great car cover you need one made from Evoulution 4 fabric. I bought mine from a place called covercraft. I think they have a website. it is preferable the car be clean beofrehand however dust will filter thru a car cover. The great thing about a Evoultion 4 cover is it is designed to allow water to evaporate out from under neath it, say after a heavy rainstorm. I stored my SVO outside all winter with a cover of this type. Well worth the extra $$.

Make sure you get a cover made specific for the SVO. If you get a standard Mustang cover it will end up short in the back due to the wing.

I'm just giving the big "me too" on the Evoulution 4 fabric. Been using one for years ... on several different cars.

I bought one today...Covercraft universal fit size D. The material is Technalon or something like that. The box says Technalon was formerly known as Evolution 4. The website also indicates that they are the same fabric. It looks like a nice cover...although I wouldn't know a nice one from a bad one. The fit is actually pretty good for being Universal. It's no work of art but that's not why I wanted it.

I picked up a nice Ford SVT cover for a Contour at the local Ford dealer for $40 new. It fit the SVO nicely except for the mirror pockets. It was a thick quality cover but I don't recall the fabric type. On another note, I was at show a few years ago and the car next to me was covered when I arrived. Afer a few hours the owner took the cover off only to find the cover deteriorated completedly dusting his car and the surrounding cars with thick white powder! I don't recall the brand but it was supposed to be a quality and expensive cover. I hope to stay away from that brand.

              Covers are pretty much universal...

I have 2 covers that I use / interchange for my 2 SVO's and my 93 Cobra clone and GT convert. The cover is a little baggy on the convert but still stays put on windy days. Most covers produced for the SVO will fit any 79 to 93 stock body Mustang hatchback (even with the higher 93 Cobra wing). It is best to have just washed the car before putting it on especially if it will have the cover on for an extended period. You should only have to remove the antenna...

                Covers

                I cover all my cars.

For cars that are stored outdoors or kept outside for an extended period of time I use the Evolution 4/Technalon units. Its not the softest fabric, but provides great protection.

For cars that remain indoors I use cotton outside / flanel lined inside. I get them from a company by the name of North Coast Tarpaulin Works. I have one for my 69 that is custom fit, very soft and easy on the paint. Great dust only cover, would not subject to rain etc.

Also note, covers keep off the large majority of contaminates, sun, and precipitation, however they will eventually leave a very light dust film after prolonged use. A quick one over with one of the "car dusters" does the trick for me.
