  • making a downpipe

I am thinking of making my own downpipe
(like the stainless one from sac mus.)

on the turbo, if you unbolt the rear exhaust elbow (part w/o2 sensor), what is the area below the exhaust outlet? is that the wastegate

from the picture on the site (sac mustang) the mating surface that bolts to the turbo has an odd shape (not just round)

can anybody post some pics of this area with the turbo apart
I dont want to take mine apart unless I know I can easily make it

does anyone have pics of a completed 3" downpipe?

    any help would be appreciated

    Thank you

    roberto2000,

I just got finished installing of this myself...here are a couple of pics...and yes, the area with the disk below the housing is where the wastegate resides...

This pic is of the elbow I had made with a 3" piece of stainless elbow welded to the original wastegate housing...

Another view of the same piece...

The disk in the bottom is the wastegate flapper, by the way...this bolts to the turbine side of the turbo

And finally the down pipe which is slip fit to the above piece right off the turbo. That is followed by a 3" CAT (Illinois has pretty stringent testing), then a Flowmaster 3" to 2 - 2 1/2" y-pipe, and those are just tied in to my existing 2 1/2" mufflers and tailpipes.

        HTH,

        Rich

Oh yeah, and by the way the Sac. downpipe is not stainless...

That's pretty cool, Rich. Just a couple questions.

            1) What did you use to join the wastagate elbow to the exhaust pipe? (Pleeeze don't say a U-bolt) Those vee band clamps are ideal but way too expensive. The strap clamps that are available for trucks are made of stainless and they conform to shape, and appear well suited to this task.

            2) What did you do for a "Y" Pipe? Did you make up something larger for that too?

              pegasus.v.o,

Rich that is a sweet looking piece. What is the cost?
Total cost was about $400, including the parts, and welding, etc.

It is slip fit, and then welded together. No clamps come into the picture until the CAT. The pipe can be removed from the turbo and the CAT only as one piece now.

I purchased a Flowmaster generic 3" to 2 1/2" y-pipe. I already had a 2 1/2" stainless cat back on it. The welder just had to make 2 little extensions from the y-pipe to the tailpipes. Very easy, really.

I believe the pipe you are talking about is the ATR pipe Sac Mustang sells.

on the turbo, if you unbolt the rear exhaust elbow (part w/o2 sensor), what is the area below the exhaust outlet? is that the wastegate.

Yes (sorta), if you are looking at the hole that lines up with the flapper door in the exhaust elbow. The Flapper door is the wastegate, the hole in the turbine housing is the hole the wastegate uses to let the exhaust bypass the turbine. The ATR pipe requiers you to enlarge this hole.

from the picture on the site (sac mustang) the mating surface that bolts to the turbo has an odd shape (not just round).

It does because it replaces the exhaust elbow which has the same irregular shaped matting surface.

                  Thanks all

                  the pics really helped

I guess to clairify I want to make a downpipe which I think looks extremly simple.
The part I want to make also is the exhaust elbow (sort of like pictured but not just welded to the old piece)
I am thinking of making the whole mating surface plate and all.
at work I have stainless plate and all the tools to make a beautiful piece (maybe even maybe a dozen)

although the welded one looks pretty good!
I would like to save my original

                  Thanks

Now, Rob....you don't think I'd go and ruin my original one now do you????

Not a chance! (it was from a JY turbo bird)

You can also buy the outlet pieces (with the wastegate flapper) online for something to weld to...let me know if you want the address....

you never know, some people ruin stuff and dont think what they are doing!

I will scour the yards around here and see what I comeup with
I think your route will save a lot of work and will give me the results I am looking for

                        Rob,

                        Check this one out:

                        Flanges

Or...I had another one that had the same thing, but WITH the wastegate flapper in it. Can't seem to find it right now, but if you want, I will keep looking.

Did you ever find the link to the one with the flapper? I've been looking all over the net for a year trying to find one and have had no luck whatsoever.
