  • Help with belt(s) install!

I'm replacing the three belts on my 1986 SVO, but I'm having a little trouble... I understand there is one belt for the AC, and two which run from the crank, water pump, alternator, and ps pump. When I went to Ford they told me the three belts are all different sizes (slightly) so I had to special order two of them. The thing is, I can't figure out why I need three different belts?! As far as I can tell the two which run parallel are the same size!

Where is the thermactor pump? Supposedly one of the parallel belts is for the alternator and one is for the thermactor pump! I'm stuck... please !

PS - where can I find a routing diagram for the belts?

2 of the belts are EXACTLY the same and you should buy/replace them in pairs. The other belt runs to the A/C.

The belts to the ALT and Power Steering Pump run side by side - your Alt should have a double V pulley on it.

A thermactor pump ....I believe that is a smog pump and your Ford Parts counter guy is smoking crack. SVOs don't have one.

Guess it's a good thing I have a SVO in the drive and a digital camera...here's a pic of the factory set on my 85 driver.

      THANKS!

That's what I thought... I have taken those belts on and off several times and couldn't understand why she sold me three (because the AC and the apparently useless thermactor belt were special order I PREPAID... I'm on my way to Ford to get me some new belts! Thanks again!
