Rear Calipers

Thought I'd share some info:

I picked up a pair of loaded Morse rebuilt rear calipers at AutoZone for $119/pair w/$90 core. (Special order item) The calipers have -steel- pistons and seem to be nice quality dispite the poor packaging (2 calipers in a box with no packing material). I've priced calipers at other places and this seemed to be about the best buy on rebuilt calipers.

I'll follow up when they are installed and working.....

Yeah, I know about the spec orders from Autozone too! I got front shocks for the ranger, both in one box, loose, and the washers and bushings rollin' around(and the damn bushings didn't work on the shocks, ran out of thread on 'em!) Still ran out of thread with the stock bushings!

Oh the details...

Hmmm...still trying to get a good rear caliper from AZ. I had 2 bad ones out of the box (parking brake doesn't work). I disassembled the first one an found an assembly problem with the adjusting nut in the piston and the 2nd one is acting the same way. I didn't take this one apart but called Morse direct. They seem real concerned about the quality issues (defective caliper, poor packaging, wrong anti-rattle clips,etc) and are taking one apart to verify it's ok, then express shipping it out to me today. Hopefully it solves the problem. By the way the driver side rear worked fine and the quality of the rebuild looks real nice.

While going through this I noticed a slight difference in the anti-rattle clip that came with the calipers. I tried to describe what I found in the attached picture, but needless to say I'm using the Ford clips since I believe the aftermarket clips will cause some kind of problem down the road since the fit is not correct. Just thought I'll pass along this little piece of info since the rear brakes can be a source of questions.

Last time I did my rear pads I installled them along with the rear brake hardware kit that Autozone sells by Brakeware. The Brakeware kit contains new anti-rattle clips exactly like the Ford clips. It also contains new rubber caliper pin insulators, which should be replaced anyway with new pads. The kit cost about $14.00.

I never saw the Brakeware clips, but I know the ones sent with my rebuilt calipers weren't the same as the Ford clips. I could tell something wasn't quite right when I was putting them on. It just proves to me again, you can't assume anything.....

So, are you saying that the calipers are $119.00, then return your old ones and get $90.00 back? That's a pretty good deal, I would say!

That's not exactly what I meant! It was really $111 a pair ($55.50 each). Not as good as your deal but the fronts were that cheap.. The $90 was a refundable ransom! I guess these cores must be hard to find.

Third time's a charm.

It took 3 right rear calipers to find a good one. The customer service from Morse was great (overnighted an inspected caliper to me from the factory) unfortunately I didn't find the rebuild quality as good.

I sent the bad one back to the tech department and am waiting on their diagnosis.

They seem surprised I had so many problems, so it was either a fluke in some of the rebuilds or their definition of quality.

I'd probably try another source next time although these calipers are suppose to have limited lifetime warranty at AutoZone. (Whatever that means). I figure I have a better change replacing defective rebuilt calipers with a LLW then the 30-90 day warranty on some of the rebuilds.

The good news is my SVO now has the best parking brake it ever had, the brake fluid is flushed, and I can replace calipers with my eyes closed!

Thanks Pat, I used the kit you mentioned from autozone, H4652 for an 86 Lincoln Mark 7 and it took a couple days to get it but they worked great! I just got through putting the bushings in the calipers and they have a very tight fit and all, just be sure you get the good hi temp silicone grease for the pins and some silicone lubricant to coat the bushings and holes to make them go in easier. You can get the rear caliper rebuild seals for about $3 per side so for $20 plus grease and some busted knuckles you can rebuilt them yourself and know they are done correctly. I tried the rebuilt racket the first couple of times and after that got my money back and threw in the towel with expecting someone to fix my car correctly. Thanks to this board my car will be finally be running, errr stopping, again!
