  • Rattles

I recently put on new rear control arms and while under there went in search of my rattles. I found that the pads in my rear calipers move verticaly in the calipers! Even by hand this makes a very audible metalic sound! Should there be some kind of insulator clips to stop this or what? Or is the pad worn to have this much play(or calipers?) The pads are going to need replacment soon any way but I want to get everthing I need the first time because the rattling makes my decent looking car sound like a peice of junk

    Thanks in advance Bruce

There is supposed to be a an anti-rattle clip that fits on back there. Also worn out and/or rotten boots for the caliper guide pins will cause the looseness you describe. Both are available in the rear brake hardware kit sold for this application (SVO & Lincoln Mark VII).

I read the rear caliper thread and wondered if I go with the Loaded Caliper will this take away from the collector value of my car? I modified my car but normaly keep the stock parts incase of a change of heart (I want to keep this car till you have to make your own gas)( but I said that about other cars) Sometimes someone has more money than I can turn down( as in out 360 Dart and in SVO-Good move eh?) PS what color were the rear control arms stock?

The Lincoln Mark VII loaded rear caliper is the same as the SVO (I own both). The stock lower control arm in my 84 is black. (original owner)

Maybe that's the source of my rattles... When accelerating slowly from a stop (like in a parking lot), I get a quick BUZZZZZZ and then it goes away. Does my symptom point to the brakes?

Is it coming from the rear of your car?

              Rattles

I had a rattle that was driving me crazy. I thought it was the heat shield on the converter. I was about at the end of my rope.

I looked at the right rear brake caliper, and all that was wrong was one side of the pad retaining spring was broken and was rattling against the caliper.

You would have never guessed that a small part could make such a loud noise!!

My noise is from the back and is similar to a heat shield noise...I'll post an update if I find it.

I too thought my rattle was a heat sheild! I knew that the mufflers had broken baffles so I was sure this was going to do it! I did a 3" DP with new catco cat and duals and found it wasn't the problem. I think that the caliper is making the noise in the rear. I also have a rattle up front. I will check out the front caliper soon and see if its the same as the back. It sounds terrible just over small bumps at low speed(and you can't hear it inside the car) EMBARSING (the noise not my spelling) The original owner said he had only put pads on the car while he had it!

One of my cars had a similar rattle. Things that I found on it that are different than the "non-rattlers":

Bad rubber exhaust hanger (a $3-4 part).
Missing springs on park brake cables to rear control arms. Bad rubber on caliper bolts(previous owner used petroleum based lube rather than silicone caliper grease) and missing anti-rattle clips.

Maybe running the car through the gears while on jackstands would allow a helper to locate the noise.

My 86 sounds like a kid shaking his penny jar when driving slow on a bumpy road. All the noise comes from the rear end.

I haven't had time yet to chase down all the problems, (rear end rebuild on on the winter schedulre) but I have done the brakes, and I put in new rubber insulators. -- that didn't help my case.

I'm betting part of my problem is the large rubber/metal vibration dampner on the rear-end is making a lot of noise. I also KNOW my rear control arm bushings are SHOT, but I can't see how that would make the rattling noise -- but it's not beyond the realm of posibilities.

Just giving some of the info I have run across ...

My car rattles also. A friend stuck his head under there while I drove over some bumps and he thought it was coming from the slapper bars. I think it might have something to do with the parking brake since mine doesn't work at all.

Wellll.....on top of the rattles, there must be some cries for help now........LOL

                            Rattles

My 84 never rattled (well, not that much) until I put on a new set of pads (I think they were porterfields). Then the car rattled like SVOeric said, "a kid rattling a penny jar" I never put the two together until someone else told me it could be the pads. So here is a good test...

Drive down your local bumpy road that makes your car rattle. Listen to it rattle now slowly and very easily apply the brakes. If your rattle goes away, it "could" be the pads.

                            Just my .02 cents.

Hoping to get on the track soon

You know the rear brakes can be a source of noise when there is a part called a 'anti-rattle clip'!

My loaded pair of calipers came with the clips, but I suspect new single un-loaded calipers don't. It's an easy part to over look during re-assembly and I'm sure some people (my cars previous owner) figure it's one of those factory pieces used on the assembly line but not needed. Wrong... The noise can drive you crazy and it sounds like something major, not a tiny little clip.

After I fixed mine and tightened the alternator bracket I was amazed how the car purred.
