  • Intercooler,strut brace?

Is anyone here running a turbocoop intercooler with a strut tower brace? If so what strut ower brace are you using? Thanks

  • #2
Now here is a useless reply. I am, but got the STB from someone on the Road Racing and Autocross Mustang list (RRAX), who didn't remember where he got it from. It sort of fits, but the corner of the intercooler does occasionally hit the brace. It is kind of wedged between the brace and the hood, so both are nice and shiny. If I were going to be showing the car, I would probably have the top milled off the TC IC, so that everything fit better. Really like the brace. Didn't believe it could do much, but it seemed to really stiffen up the front end when I installed it. Because of that one, I want to make one for our C Prepared Solo II Firebird. THAT one has to clear the air cleaner (gotta run a Holley carb in that class).

Sorry for the "I do, but don't know" post.

Well thanks for the reply at least! I am just trying to figure out what kind of strut brace to use with a turbo coupe IC. I guess i'll wind up fabricating something unless someone strats making one that fits! By the way nice car, my 86 is also 2R! Thanks again.

        JBA

The JBA Brace will fit if you can find one. I had one on my car at one time then i sold it trying to make my car bone stock then I grew up and started to play. now I wish I had it again. I havent found one that fit as well.

Yep, the JBA brace fits just fine with the TC intercooler. I bought mine back in 1992. As I remember, I ordered it and had to wait a couple of months to get it. Still have it on my 84. Good luck finding one.

Anyone using a brace while using a rotated intake (ie for a front mount IC)? I just got my SVO together this weekend, with all the fun goodies (the T56 6 speed is AWESOME). Any suggestions? Just don't want to reinvent the wheel here.

Now when looking for this JBA brace is it made specifically for the SVO or just for a fox mustang?

It was sold by JBA as an SVO specific strut tower brace. It was different from the one they were selling for the 5.0 at the time.It will also fit the Tbird TC and the Mustang GT Turbos. It consists of a curved brace that joins the two strut towers. There is nothing that extends rearward toward the firewall to get in the way of an intercooler mounted over the turbo in the usual SVO fashion.

                    Exactly

That is exactly how I remember it. I talked to JBA and they are not interested in making them again. I asked for the drawings to send to someone else for fabrication and they would not even entertain the idea. I cant blame them. Oh well.

yeah, Mr Biddle sold his SVO a while ago (to a friend of mine), so they just dont care any more.

would it be possible to buy a 5.0L one and just use the front section (cut off the bars that go back)??

                        I guess

The JBA was a real beafy unit from what I remember and had a weird bend on the passengerside to acomidate the IC. You could cut the 5.0 brace but I dont think they are as thick (at least the ones I saw). I will poke around. It does have some merrit.

                            Picts

                            Pat,
I have been looking for my original engin and car picts since I moved 6 years ago. I cant find them anywhere. They are probably in the box marked weding photos (god knows I wont look there).

I have been trying to find the pict of my ARE wheels that were BBS knock offs. They looked great on the SVO and didnt rub at all. 16in rims black honeycomb patern with silver rings. I am looking for another set but no dice.

Pat, I STILL HAVE my JBA FSB. I suppose we could reverse engineer it. My SVO is still up in Paso Robles, but I'm planning on getting it back sometime in September. Maybe we could embark on a little side project!
