  • Knock Sensor and a lil story

Well after going to the Track Fri. I want to tell a lil story.

First off my 84 SVO was one of 3 at the track Fri.

Here was the list of them
1984 Med. Canyon Red, Cloth MINE
1984 Med. Canyon Red, Cloth Brian Hall's ( He ran 12.4's at 108)
1984 Med. Canyon Red, Leather I didnt' catch his name Car had 19,XXX miles on the thing. Talk about clean.

Anyways. I was going to see what the lil Svo of mine could do BONE BONE stock. I'm talking 1984 muffler, cat, filter, everything on the lil guy. So someone told me to try it with the knock sensor unplugged. I was a lil worried about it. And boy did I have reson to be. I drove it aroudn the parking lot before making a pass. And i'm glad i did... After about 4,500 That lil motor pinged. And I pulled out of the gas.... and popped the hood... and slapped that knock sensor back on.

Proof in the pudding. That 92 octane, 30 pound injectors and WAY to much timming don't mix. I'm glad I didn't trust the person enough to try to make it down the track like that. I'm going to keep her civil and stock till I have time to do mods the right way..

    Though I would share.

That if you have a stock 84 and try this to make it faster. you better be running race gas... to save a head gasket. IMHO Free mods aren't always good mods.

Um.... if it is pigging with the knock sensor unplugged , then it is pinging with it plugged in. Its just that with it plugged in you are loosing massive amounts of performance.

The guy did not give you bad advise. He just failed to mention (or assumed) that you had it running and tuned properly.

You dont. Find out why its pinging. Its not a matter of trusting him. Be glad you found out that your car has something wrong with it. Now go figure out what it is.

First thing to check on that engine is what is the base timing set at...

GT350R hit the nail on the head with his comment.

If your car is pinging with the KS disconnected, there is something there you need to look at...

I will be checking...all that when I get back from the WFC. I dont' want to touch anything till I get back.

It needs to make the trip.

All the more reason you SHOULD check it NOW! Something is WRONG! A knock sensor works by "hearing" knocking/detonation. So that means it IS happening! Not keeping it from happening. Are you familure with the effects of detonation? Or Murphys law and long trips in a car?

It could be as simple as checking your timing.

Holes in pistons dont make very good long trips.
