  • Cold Air Intake

    Product: Cold Air Intake
    Vendor: Motion Dynamics
    Recommendation: Gotta Have It!

I recently purchased this unit, and I must say it is a very nice piece...especially if you like Chrome!

The unit was resonably priced ($159.00 + SVOCA Discount)

The unit was pretty easy to install, except for trying to reach under the car to get the filter on, kinda rough, but not bad.

The unit places the filter in the fender-well to get a much colder charge than if it was in the engine bay.

When I fired the car up and went for a test drive, I mashed the accelerator, and all I heard was a "WWWHHHHOOOOOSSSSSHHHH" from inside the fender! It was awesome...could feel a difference in acceleration immediately.

I would, however, recommend you get a by-pass valve to go along with it though. You get alot of compressor surge, and it sounds pretty scary without it. The bypass valve will eliminate the air from being forced back against the turbo in the wrong direction when you let off of the throttle. It will also increase the life of the turbo...so I'm told.

    compressor surge

    Rich,

It's my guess the compressor surge happens regardless of the addition of the cold air intake. I run a K&N cone on the end of the VAM and I hear the same noise. I think the stock air cleaner housing just muffles all that noise.

The bypass valve is still an excellent idea for increased impeller durability. By eliminating the compressor surge with a bypass valve the impeller speed isnt slowed as much there by reducing re-spool up time between shifts (or so the claims say).

      Rich,
Did you switch from the stock set-up to the cold air kit? Or from a cone mounted in the engine compartment?
Do you have a picture of your set-up?
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

Do '86 cars have a different inner fender than 84 and 85 cars. Ihe inner fender on my 85.5 does not have the hole in it that this cold air piece seams to fit into. It looks like an 87 and up inner fender in those pictures.

I do know that 86's did have this hole.

I also know that 84's Don't have that hole...

85, and 85.5, I dont know for sure, but would assume they do not,(from your note Lon)

              Different inner fender well.

              Eric (and Lon),

That makes complete sense. Ford didnt need that new hole until 1986 when they switched to the fuel injected set up for the GT. Makes sense for all mustangs from that point forward to utilize the same inner fenderwell.

As a side note I just finished installing a MAC Inner Fenderwell Cold Air kit for an 86-88 non-mass air V-8 on my SVO. All I had to do is cut down the main pipe that leaves the fender well and then hook it up. Looks sweet. It looks just like the one on the Motion Dynamic's site but I cost me about half that (E-Bay). I'll post some pictures later this week.

MAC Cold Air kit (86-88 5.0 No Mass Air Kit)

Here are pictures of my install (MINOR mods) of a fenderwell cold air kit.

This replaces a K&N Cone Filter. Hopefully it will get a bit cooler intake charge but it also supports the VAM and I can hose the engine off without having to worry about soaking th K&N.

                    Cudd,

That looks like a very clean deal. I kinda wish I had that style inner fender. Oh well. I do have the Tiny Avenger cold air intake though. It is quite functional, just doesn't look as flashy as the MAC intake piece.

                      Cold Air Kit

                      Lon,

THanks. I have actually been debating if I should paint the metal black. I am not big on chrome or polished look unless it's wheels or exhaust tips. And it does kinda stick out under the hood. I prefer a more subtle look.

As a side note, anyone have any of the circular black plastic block off plates that go in the old air intake opening in the fenderwell? I think they came on other mustangs.
