  • Aftermarket Shifters

I've personally owned/used 3 aftermarket shifters....and here's my impressions on them. If you have tried some not listed - please reply and tell us about it.

You will have to use an standard Mustang shifter knob as well. Your original is metric threaded and will not fit aftermarket handles. I've used a 94/95 leather knob and a 99-up Cobra knob. Liked em both....but prefer the 94/95 leather knob due to the smaller size ($40)

Pro 5.0 - probably the best one out there - overall, but not by much. I don't see the increase in price justifying owning the name. The inventor of the smooth/spring from 2nd to 3rd shift....but sometimes too strong and it caused me to go into 5th on a couple of 'casual driving' shifts. Has positive stops....and this is cruicial so you won't bend or break a shift fork while in the heat of things. Solid billet construction. Solid steel shifter arm. Easy to install. Retail is usually something like $180-190.00

Kirban qwik shift Best kept secret for the money. Give you a solid feel to your shift. Does everything the Pro 5.0 but doesn't look as pretty...like you can see that under the shifter boot? Plus - it cost less. This is what I am currently using in my 85 9L. Retail is usually around $150.00

Hurst NOT the factory one your SVO came with, but rather what Hurst developed afterwards. It has the adjustable positive stops - but the shifter arm is made of a cheap metal. I broke two (2) shifter arms before I finally yanked the shifter and went with the Kirban. Also, it did not spring a 2nd-3rd shift - you had to put it there. Current retail I found was $159-179.00

again - these are my personal opinions. if you have a shifter you have tried or use - please reply here and let us know about it.

the first aftermarket Hurst sucked, no doubt, the Comp Plus+ (Hurst's second shot at it) is pretty much a B&M Ripper, which i preffer ( B&M ) it uses a polyurethane pivot that takes alot of the vibration out on the shifter. i was a salesman for Ramchargers in MI and the Kirban is a great piece, that they sell to everyone else including Saleen, Steeda, i think the "new" D&D Motorsports is a Kirban and others. Kirban will make anything and will put your name on it from plug wires to......... well shifters. The new Hurst and B&M use the spring to find 3rd also.

        I like the hurst!

I've got the Hurst on my car, the 2nd one with the billet base. I also got the hurst chrome handle and hurst T-shift knob seperately($$$$$$$). All together it makes a very nice looking and excellent functioning shifter. It springs from 2nd to 3rd very nicely and is the most positive feeling shifter I've ever felt. Well just my .02! -Mark

i'm running with a Pro-5.0 base but with a Turbo T-Bird handle cause the Pro-5.0 felt too low, the stock handle "SVO" was too tall and would need metal sleeves for the two bolts. BTW Pro-5.0 offers the sleeves to mate up your stock handle.

I just put in a steeda triax. What an improvement over the hurst shifter! Everything is tight, smooth, short... I have no complaints.

There have been complaints about being able to hear transmission noise moreso with the steeda triax, but it is actually quieter with this shifter.

                HURST Comp Plus+
                Steeda Tri-Ax

I was nervous about getting the Hurst (due to bad reviews and complaints about the first shifter) but I really wanted to keep the Hurst name under the shift boot.
This unit is just as good/better than the Steeda. The throws seem even shorter, but it could just seem that way going from that 4 speed Datsun truck style stock SVO shifter. I highly recommend it.

I like the Tri-ax too. It's a great shifter from what I was able to gather from my make shift install into my V6. Missinfo from ford led me to getting the 3650 shifter. I'll eventually replace it with the correct one, just to busy playing with the SVO these days.

I'd highly recommend it as well. I've ran the Tri-ax in this SVO and had a Pro 5.0 in my old SVO... and while the shifting is similar I'd pick the Tri-ax over the Pro 5.0 anyday of the week. The Tri-ax can be set to one of two heights, and shifts very smoothly. The Pro 5.0 was just too short in my opinion... I never could shift the thing right.

Pro 5.0 is short and almost impossible to miss a shift. If yuou can improve over it , I haven't seen it. Ralph

I'm using a Pro 5.0 shifter with Ford Motorsport Leather shift handle and shift boot. I like the set-up and this was one of the first mods I did after getting the car.

HANDS DOWN the Steeda Tri-ax shifter is one of the best on the market. it is the first shifter that I purchased and would not buy anything else. it has all the features that I was looking for and the price you can not beat, along with buying it at I think it was Laurel Mountain, the shipping is free of charge, and they where the cheapest of them all.

When looking for a replacement shifter, I was going to get the Pro5.0, but the place I called was out, so I just ordered the Ripper. Quite happy with it. The handle is a little short, making upshifts to 3rd tough during a solo event with the harnesses (and I sit quite close to the wheel), but I have yet to miss a shift. :-)

I highly recommend them. While you can get nice shifters for less, if you get a Ripper, I doubt you will be displeased.
