  • Transmission Pops Out Of 2nd and 4th

I've noticed lately that my transmission will pop out of gear in 2nd and 4th, especially in cold weather. I read in Mustang Monthly that this can be caused by a faulty clutch adjuster? Any truth to that? Any other thoughts? My car is an 84, so it has the regular T5, not the World Class.

I've got an 86 and there is an adjustment bolt that acts as a stop on the shifter. If it is out to far, then it can pop out of gear.

Check that first before you dig into your transmission.

        Jumping Trans in 84

When my 84 was new, it would also jump out of 4th when the weather was cold ( <40 degrees). I took it back into the dealer under warranty and they reshimmed the gears. It was a lot better, but would still do it occasionally for a few years after than. It wasn't a big problem her in SoCal where it rarely gets that cold. It has not done that in a long time now. I guess that after 220,000 + miles the gears are worn in! -LOL.

That adjustment bolt sounds like the culprit. Now that I think about it, the previous owner installed a new Hurst shifter right before he sold me the car. Probably didn't get a chance to adjust it correctly.
