  • finally putting on exhaust...

After a few months of negative progress on getting my pony running (long story!), I'm finally attempting to work on the exhaust.

Basically, my 84 has an exhaust elbow attached to the turbo, and y-pipe to dual exhaust like an 86. However, there was no downpipe or cat between the elbow and the y-pipe when I bought the car (actualy there was no engine and these are all the parts I had!). Now I got a downpipe/cat off an 86 to try to smog it in CA (thanks again Vince!).

I got the pipe installed, but it's leaking at the elbow to downpipe flange. Do I need a gasket here? or did I just not tighten it enough? I plan on removing all this and putting in a full 3" cat-less exhaust after she's smogged anyway, so I just need it good enough to pass the test.

Any help, tips, torque-specs, part numbers, etc. would be greatly appreciated. My chiltons glosses over the exhaust

    Thanks

There is no gasket at the joint where the cast elbow meets the downpipe. If re-tightening the two nuts doesn't cure the leak, remove it again and inspect the sealing area for exhaust tracks which will identify the location of the leak. If there is a crack there, a bit of weld followed by cleanup with a die grinder should take care of it.

      Leaks....

.....the two joints have to 'mate' well and tighten the two nuts evenly again......

I'm thinking I'll pull it, look for tracks/crack, make sure that the surfaces are clean and try again.

        Anybody have torque specs???

I do, real tight. No specs needed man, just consider the rustyness of the studs and cast iron. Just go pretty tight till you cant turn no more, ha!

Izzy- Your probably right! I just happen to be on the page in my manual that had these tourque specs when I read this post.

                Thanks,

The flange at the downipipe may have taken a set and sagged over the years of heat cycling. You may wish to try a couple washers above the nuts or look for some way to straighten the flange.

                    love dem specs...

Thanks for the great info.. unfortunately I haven't been able to get back to exhaust since I'm now in the midst of moving. At least I'll have room to keep the car at home instead of at my friends place and will hopefully be able to actually make progress on it more quickly.

                    Thanks again for the info.

The studs could have partially backed out of the elbow as well. This will cause them to run out of threads and feel tight before it is properly sealed...I've seen it many times.
