Throttle Linkage

We have all seen this.
I can't remember what it used to look like. Wasn't it a bronze kinda look? ANyway...if it doesn't clean up should I paint it ? Or what? And what about that "fuse" looking thiny??
Just trying to ask the "winter questions" for the rest of the gang!

originally ... it was cadmium plated (the gold looking shiney stuff). It won't clean up well. You can replate it, sand blast it, or sand/paint (semi gloss black or something).

The linkage - a wire brush will do.

just a btw, Eastwood has some amazing paints to make stuff like that look new again. It's paint, but I swear it looks fresh out of the factory when applied.

There's a guy...

There's a guy... can't remember his name at the moment... does gold cad plating for Mustangs. Spoke with him at great length about SVO's and the various parts that are plated at last years MCA Grand National. He's a local guy here in Georgia and a MCA judge. He will plate anything you want in either gold or clear. I'll try to figure out what his name is when I get home... I'll be back!

Looking at the Eastwood site I find the Gold-Cad "kit" is $32, w/clear coat its $40. I can swing this. Aren't there other parts up there that had this look? Might as well do them too! Is the clear coat too much shine for these parts?

If you look at the pic in my first post here you see the linkage that IS part of the butterfly? It looks as though this is not supposed to be removed (whacky press-on connector). My brother-in-law says don't try to remove this one and just clean it as best I can. It looks like you could remove the butterfly screws but he says leave them alone as they are most likely peened. "And you don't want them comin off. Screws and engine inards don't mix!"

I had a carbed 79' 2.3 turbo where the turbo was mounted after the carb. One of the tiny screws on the choke plate of the carb came off, went thru the turbo and put a hole in a piston. I figured this out when I pulled the motor apart and realized that I was missing a TINY screw on the choke plate. Your brother-in-law is right (but with a EFI car you won't wreck the turbo). The cleanliness is not worth the cost of a motor. Really, all you need to do is find a NOS throttle body.

I have had luck using a bench grinder with a cotton buffing wheel to clean up some of the cadmium plated stuff on my beater. There is a polishing compound that you can get from Home Depot along with the wheel.

I polished the IAC motor so that it was a shiny as chrome. There is a great site for getting buffing supplies and they have home plating kits for sale as well. Here is the link:

PS. I have taken my thottle plate out for cleaning before and have not lost a screw. If you want to be sure, use red loctite.
