  • smoke at start up

my 86 ran like a champ. now that it is colder out when i start it it smokes. sometimes it is a puff and sometimes it takes 20 sec. or so to clear up.

i have read the post on smoking svo's and my best guess is that my valve seals are starting to go. they are the original ones with 58xxx miles on them.

if anyone has anyideas let me know. and if is the seals, where can i get the TC ones. I also have acces to an 85 head, would there be any problems to get the TC seals in that so that my car wont have any down time.

    thanks

Yeah, its probably more than likely valve seals on the Ex side...they frail up due to the heat pretty quick.

Not sure what you mean by the TC ones, but replacements are available through ford.

It could also be your oil seal inside the turbo. Pull your intercooler and look down in the compressor side. Do this after the engine has cooled down / sat overnight. If it is the seal you will see a small puddle of oil where it has leaked down in side the compressor housing. If the seal is bad the engine will suck up the oil and burn it out the tailpipes. Also... do you perform the "spin down" before shutoff? This is where you allow the engine to idle for a minute or so to allow the turbo to slow down after running the crapola out of it. I've found if I run mine hard and then just turn it off I'll get a short puff out of the pipes.

Hey Ken, you sure that oil is from the turbo...?

Meaning if you are still running the breather from the back of the valve cover to the inlet of the turbo, that is more than likely where your oil is coming from.

The only problem is that if you remove the breather ( or vent it to the atmosphere, ) then you have a problem with "pressure" building up from blow-by which will in turn make a few leaks in the valve cover.

In anycase, I would be willing to bet that if your getting oil in the intercooler / intake that it is coming from that primitive evac system that they put on.

i do do a spin down after i been driving it like i stole it. i was wondering if that could be it i also pulled the mufflers off and have been running pipe all the way out back. i ordered new mufflers but wont be here for a week or so. could this mean that i can cool the turbo down as well because of no back pressure. i will yank the intercooler off tomorrow.

            thanks for the help

              Could be...

Yes Gator you could be right... Didn't really consider that option. That would probably bleed more oil into the housing than the seal. Since mine are all original I'm somewhat ignorant ( not actually stoopid! DOH! ) when it comes to mods and the effect they have on the other systems.
