  • High boost sputter(long)

Let me start with all my plugs ,wires cap , rotor and pvc have about 1,000 mi. on them and all Motorcraft. Also 255 pump, Kirban adjusted at 39 psi with vacuum off. I have a manual boost control adjusted to about 18 psi (stock gauge). What is happening is under heavy acceleration when in high boost I get a bad sputter, many of you may have heard it during the autocross at the reunion, and it takes a few seconds for it to clear up. I installed the Kirban today and it seemed to help a bit but it still does it but just not as bad. Also since I'm already out of the closet in the computer chip post, I have a Superchip with 42lb injectors(I know, I know). I have a few of theories #1 the chip is a POS and the 42's are too big. #2 The stock gauge is way off and it is getting more than 18 PSI #3 Years back a friend of mine screwed with the VAM (bent some spring) but it didn't sputter back then. I have some 35 lb injectors on the way I am going to ditch the chip and try that but I thought I'd see what input I would get from you guys. Before I get asked my mods are as follows gutted and ported intake, stock head with Ranger cam, PE computer, ported E6 , larger turbo from Turbo City ( I think it has a larger compressor wheel), full 3 inch exhaust. Sorry for the long post.

    svoman2300,

I'm running 42s on the stock PE in my '86. Just try unplugging the Chip and see what you get.

The only thing I noticed with the 42s is a drop in fuel milage, but that could just be a results of my heavy foot/city driving.

That would be a quick way to eliminate the chip as the culprit.

10 degrees . I thought the Supercrap recalibrated the computer for 42's. I'll try unplugging it.

Well I unplugged the Superchip and it ran noticably worse. I messed with the fuel pressure and it didn't run any bettter or stop the sputter. Well I decided to mess with the cam timing since I have an adjustable gear and noticed like a retard I retarded the timing 6 degrees instead of advancing it. After advancing the cam timing the sputter went away. Now I can hold th pedal to the floor and flog it like it was meant to be driven.
