    Help???
Can anyone explain the Fog light wiring to me. Here is my delema. I have a 86' SVO. When I drive with the headlights on by them selves no problem. When I turn on the fog lights after a few minutes the lights go off and on sporaticly. This only happens with the fog lights on. How do I fix this????? HELP>>>>>

    Change the headlight switch!
    It's not that difficult.
And stop using the "fog" lamps.
Is your fog lamp switch "fused" yet? That's the bigger problem.

I haven't been using the fog lights since the problem reared it's ugly head. Worst problem is I have to leave to go to work in the dark before sunrise. Wish I could use the fog lights. Will replacing the headlight switch fix the fog light issue?

It did for me and I'm sure it will for you. I am not sure if this is permanent fix or temp. I try not to drive mine at night anymore as my switch is frozen "ON" for the fog lights (so I don't want to tax the switch). You can just flick to high beams and drive that way, it turns the fogs off.
        Others please chime in!

When I add fog lights to a car that doesn't have them, I will use the parking light feed to power the switch. The switch will power a relay to supply the fused power to the fog lamps. This way, nothing gets loaded down like the head light switch.

The other benifits are that it will work with any existing headlight buzzer, turn off with the head lights and you can use the fog lights with the high beams (not always practical). Most states require the lights to be on while fog lights are used which is why they are wired to the low beams.

Somewhere floating around here (maybe in this forum, I can't remember) there is a way to use a relay to reduce the strain on the fog light switfches ...

there is also a way to use a relay to do the same thing to the headlight switch. -- the wiring for the headlights is borderline large enough when you consider the amperage coming across it. -- now add 20 years of age to it, and you start burning up wiring and switches. ..

the fix was to run a new, heavy gauge, run of wire from the starter soliniod to a relay (there may have been 2 for the headlights??) -- and then the wires that run to the existing switches only actuate the relay -- which means they cary almost no amperage across them.

I'll look around, and see if I can find the articles. Maybe I can get permissio to repost them here..

I posted something about that a long time ago regarding what I did on my 84. When I measured the voltage at the headlamps before the mod it was <10 volts.

I mounted Bosch relays behind the core support in front of the battery. The B+ wire to the headlamps became the signal wire to the relays. It was a nice short run for the power wire and fuse from the solenoid to the relays and minimal rewiring. After that, the headlamps got full Battery and alternator voltage (13.5 with engine running) and the headlamps were noticeably brighter. Don't forget to scrub down all the headlamp ground wires on the core support as well.

No problem. The link you provided has a nice schematic, and saves me all those "AA" batteries for the Sony camera. LOL!
