I purchased my 84 SVO used about four years ago and was wondering if it has the original valve cover on it. It is black with fins, it doesn't say Ford Fuel Injection on it. Did they use this valve cover on the early 84 cars or did someone swap it out in the past?
Additionally, I bought a valve cover off of a Merker with the Ford Fuel Injection on it and want to clean it up before I put it on. Is it powder coated? The reason I ask is because I used paint stripper and get the old paint off.
Thanks

Hey jr
If you have an 84 your factory valve cover should look exactly like the one svoeric has for his avatar. Sounds like you have a turbo coupe cover from a later modell (87-88). Whole motor could be from tc.. Check to see if your turbo is water-cooled if so chances are you have a tc motor in your car. 84 svo turbo was not water-cooled.

The previousowner put a water cooled turbo on it but did a bad job on the hoses and lines. I have since bought and installed all of the correct hoses and lines. There was still a plug in the block below the turbo that I had to have removed at an exhaust shop.
Were all of turbo coupes water cooled?
Do you have any suggestions on how to get the old paint off of the valve cover I took off of the Merker?
Thanks

JR.
Check the casting numbers on your block.I believe that you have a later model motor. I am basing this on the knowledge of the fact of the later model valve cover along with the fact that it sounds like you have an outlet on the block where the water line would run . Blocks made prior to the induction of watercooling would have no use for that outlet. Your casting should be no higher than an e4,since your car is an 84.My guess is that youll find an e7 or8 #. As for the year t-bird went to a watercooled set-up I am not certain but I "THINK" it was possibly 86, I know the 87 was watercooled. Maybe someone else on the board can give a definite year?
As for removing the paint from the old valve cover, go to wal-mart and pick up a can of "OFF" paint and varnish remover. It is in a spray can so you dont have to mess with a brush like other paint removers and it works great.

oops!!!!! sorry jr.
It is the "oil" line on the side of block.
The coolant for the turbo tees off the line which runs around the head comming from the water pump.
I would still check the casting # though, it is still quite possible you have a later model engine.
I guess thats why they call this the world wide web of disinformation!!! LOL

SVO Eric
The valve cover I got off of the Merker looks like the one in your sig.
Pegasus
The plug that came out of the side of the block was a water plug.
Thanks
