  • Caliper rebuild

I have a couple of questions regarding the front calipers on my 86 SVO. I notice a lot of movement on the calipers (driver side more that passenger) and I believe it is causing a rattle noise (the pads seem to shift a lot). Each caliper has a clip on the front - Is there a clip for the back? Do these caliper usually have a lot of movement & play in them? If not, would a rebuild work?

    Thanks

There is only a clip for the front of the brake pad, which attaches to the caliper slide pin for the front (top) part of the brake pad.

I believe these clips are to prevent movement of the brake pads, which may help with pad noise (i.e. squealing)

Normally, there isn't much movement in the pads without the clip anyway; most likely, you may have the wrong front pads. The inner front pad should clip into the caliper piston with a bit of force. If it's very easy or loose, something is wrong...it could be the incorrect pads or screwed up clip on the back of the pad or the caliper pistons are damaged...

A rebuild is always a good idea, if they haven't been done before; a better thing to do would be to get rebuilt Bendix replacement front brake calipers with the steel pistons.

I picked up some Bendix rebuilds because they didn't seem to have any play at all. The bad deal is it comes with pads - which I already had a set of Bendix pads I put in a few thousand miles earlier. Also, new caliper hoses are $20 each I could probably live w/o them - but I might as well do it right. I should have done the calipers when I did the pads last - its almost the same price

      Thanks for the replies
