doesnt the new cobra's independant rear suspension share the same attachment points as the fox bodys'? i think its a little wider, but couldnt it work? has any svo owners done this yet? didnt they originally want irs on the svo? it would make it an even better car in my opinion. i cant wait to drive my svo to have to get used to the stick axle throwing me around again!

It has been done, somebody in New York, cant remember his name and it should be the same width as the SVO. I have IRS in my Cobra and it makes a world of difference. Ride is alot better.

There is a guy in Arizona (?) with an IRS in his SVO and I believe that motion dynamics has done this swap on at least one SVO.

I was the 1st known guy to stick one in an SVO.
the swap took 14 hours (from driving it in to pulling it out).

            you will need:
            the IRS (duh)
frame mounts (go on the rear of the IRS to bolt to your frame)
brakes and IRS specific rubber brake lines
exhaust from the 99+ cobra (more on this later)
2 steel brake lines. I can't remember the lengths, but it isn't that dificult to find out what you need.
a brass "y" adapter. this goes ont he end of the stock hard line and splits off to the 2 brakes

the exhaust took me 25 mins to setup. the 86 has a Y pipe after the cat. I simply measured the pipe and cut it in the location where it would fit inside the cobra exhaust. I then cut the cobra exhaust to the correct length also. I diddn't even have to use a pipe stretcher!

              More irs info..

Fwiw, Neil Emiro of New Mexico has also done this conversion.

I have a 2003 irs sitting in my garage waiting (rather patiently I might add) to go in my project 86.

Whats even better is if I run into problems I can always have Phil come check it out in person! It was his car that suduced me into making a copy cat version of my own!

I found it is just a little wider than the stock SVO axle (but dont know how much)- I used the '94 GT 17 inch tri bar rims.
the stock SVO rims wont fit over the brakes. (mike and I found that out late one night).

Barry Dean in Bakersfield has also done the IRS swap into an SVO.

So how do the weights of the two compare (IRS vs. factory live axle)? The assembly looks heavy. Could probably be lightened up some with some tubular parts and more aluminum, but it looks heavy. The great part about the SVO is light weight, it would be a shame to make the car heavier, even if traction is better.

You also loose more hp due to the drive train. I'm not sure if it is because of the weight or because of the moving parts. HP to the wheels is less. It's a sizeable number. I don't recall exactly but more than 10%.
