  • Mounting Front License Plate?

Since the day mine was born it has not had a license plate on front, even though its the stinkin' law in this state. I was pulled over the second day I had the car but I had temps (on the back) and that is fine. (I will never understand why its OK to NOT have a plate up front for its first 30 days but after that you can get a ticket.) Anyway, after 17 years I got a stupid ticket last year for not displaying a front tag. I showed the cop how I kept the front tag under my passenger seat for quick display but he wasn't amused. He said its the law so they can find our cars better when they get stolen. I told him I cant see how that helps unless they read every plate of every car that passes in the opposite direction. And living between Delaware and Pennsylvania (where front tags are not displayed) only makes matters worse. (This did not amuse him either.) So I'm wondering if there is a way to mount a plate without drilling holes in my perfect bumper cover. Perhaps some sort of bracket coming from down-under somewhere. Just curious if anyone else has this dilemma. Otherwise NBD, I'll just accept the pointless-no point $50 tickets.
On a completely different note....have you all seen that Mustang Coffee Table Book with the beautiful 9L in the middle?

I had a similar problem too.

my white SVO has never even had holes drilled in the front, so I used double sided tape to stick the plate to the front bumper.
I actually did this in the parkinglot of the local cop shop, and went in to get it signed off. they saw it, signed it, went back inside, so I took the plate off and drove home.

I have been without a front plate on most of my cars since day 1, and only been pulled over once.

out here, they use them to photograph you when you run a red light.

Yes, I've had the same problem. Yes, my 85.5 9L is a California car that requires front plates but there are NO mounting holes in my bumper and there never will be.

I've been ticketed before on my 2R '85 for no front plates by the meter maid on street sweeper day and paid a reduced fine ($10) once I sent in a photo of the car with front plates installed.

What I plan to do with the 85.5, if it comes to that, is to make a plate holder with tabs that can be attached to the lower edge of the bumper with C-clamps so I don't have to drill holes in the original bumper skin.

Not to hijack this thread but is the Book your talking about the new thick White one w/ a small pic of the 65 on the front and it's like $50?

Actually on the plate, when I get mine together I'm gonna weld a couple of bolts to the inside of the steel bumper and bend some brackets to hang it below the bumper, but between the fog lights.

            front plate

my comp prep car has never had a front plate on it and i am not the original owner. even though i live in a front license state i have either been lucky or the cops choose to look the other way. i also refuse to drill the front bumper!!!!!!

I would like to see pictures of the brackets you guys are thinking of making. I will not drill holes in my 86 bumper for a liscense plate either. I haven't been messed with for not having the front plate yet. But, I would be interested in making a bracket to mount it if I get harassed very often.

                Nota50

The book I have is big (12 x 18?) and has a black cover. I'll dig it out later a post its Title.
Your idea about a bracket is exactly what I had envisioned. Get some sort of "bendable" straps and attach to the metal bumper (or something) behind/below the cover.
On another note, I just received a new horn pad from Chris at allmustangparts. Sweeeeet! Matches my new wheel leather grain texture to a "T"!!! I am in Stang Heaven. Thanks loads Chris!

I'd like to meet the moron that came up with the idea of putting license plates on the front of cars anyway!!

in KY, they are not required

                      License Plate Bracket

Well, I know what you guys are going through. Had my share of State Trooper pullovers for the plate and tinted windows. I even put the plate inside between the windshield and dashpad. What I did was get some brackets from Homedepot, License plate holder at auto parts store. Drilled a couple holes in the underside of the upper part of the bumper. Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera for a picture. Looks good and solves the dilemma. Happy holidays everyone.
