  • engine code readers

In the past I have been using an older, inexpensive (less than $30) code reader for my Fords. It requires you to watch it over the course of minutes in order to count all the little LED blinks, so I've always thought it was a PITA to use.

Can anyone suggest a good value (make /model /where to buy) for a more modern, more intelligent code reader? Also, what is the current state of the art for engine scanners or something to monitor the EEC? Has the technology gotten us to where we can monitor things with an attached laptop computer?

nope -- what you have is about as good as anything.

the computer just don't have what needs to hook up in the way you need. -- unless you go with a aftermarket system, such as a sds.

I favor the ones that actually spit out a numeric code and not flashing lights I have to count.

Look for an old OTC 2000 or 4000. they should be able to be gotten cheaply and they work much faster than the flashing light mumbo jumbo.

Thanks for the advice. I'll follow up on the OTC equipment.
