  • Arggh! Rust

I've been working on the 86 I purchased last christmas. Yea I'm a little slow but just trying to do stuff right.
Had seroius rust in the D/S floor around the rear bolt holes, "the seat was actually rocking on acceleration" and at the base of the firewall. The lower corner of the P/S door frame and at the grommett hole for the antenna.

Are these common rust places on SVOs and are there any other places that I need to check out with the interior gutted?

I'm not sure they are common rust places- --

they are common stress crack areas -- the cracks -- when subjected to salt, road grime and such would make for a place to start rusting ...

this isn't a SVO thing either -- it is a fox mustang thing in-general -- a LOT of mustangs had this proplem.

oh yea-- the place on your passenger side is probably from the heater core

        Rusty SVO's

Another common area of rust is the roof, especially above the hatch and on the C pillars where the seams are leaded over.

The seat floor was prone to cracks which is why Ford had a recall on it. I don't know of anyone ever getting satisfaction on the recall though.

Trunk lids and hatches were another bad area. Most cars with body color spoilers only had primer under the spoiler.

I'm currently new to svo ownership with a rusty beginning. For sheet metal replacement I've been cutting up 79 to 93 fox bodys at the autowreckers, works great less expence.
