  • Upgrading to CD / XM ... Your experience?!?

I have kept this car origional since purchased in 88. However, 2003 has been the year to consider some changes. I AM ALL EARS! The car is in good shape. So I am most interested in interior upgrades.

For now, I'd like to upgrade to CD's and XM. I plan on keeping the stock speakers in place.

...looking to hear from anyone who has already dove in on this!

    Stereo Upgrades

What year is your SVO? The 85-86 cars can accept a more modern radio /head unit with out as much trouble as they came with the Ford electronic stereo that mounts in the usual large square hole in the dash.

The 84 cars have a shaft type setup that requires the dash be cut (a No-No!) or the installation of a more complex and hidden system that ties in with the original and preserves the stock look.

I am assuming that you DO want to be able to return to stock appearance should the need arise?

It's an 86 and yes, I would like to easily re-install the origional if needed. Are there any issues with wiring? I spoke with a fella who was under the impression that there was not a quick connect / plug option due to the way the "premium / JBL" was installed at Ford ... something about each speaker being individually grounded. He thought the entire car stereo system would have to be re-wired. ... not sure I believe him.

Keeping the stock appearance would be most desired. However, the volume knob produces static, and often redistributes the sound to one or more speakers only. Today, I have the volume set at a desireable level. When I turn it on, and refrain from touching that knob, everything works well!
