  • KS issue and questions

I've posted some of this info before but heres my question. I unplugged my KS for the first time at the drag strip back in august after i noticed my times were dropping off almost a whole second. I know the cam doesn't make anymore poser after 5K on 85s but the motor would fall on its face at around 4.5K. Thinking it was a timing issue i unplugged the KS and sure enough my times dropped. So i left it unplugged ever since. I run the highest octane (91) available in the bay area and sometimes if you sit at idle for a while even if the water temp is down (manual fan), when i get on it hard it pings a bit until enough airflow has cooled the intercooler off i guess. This got annoying so i replugged the KS back in for normal driving and now after 6psi or so the timing goes crazy and even though the boost is on fully, the engine doesn't respond and even starts falling on its face again. So i unplugged the KS again and it went away. KS bad? I checked for codes with a NGST and it said my KS was faulty. I didn't realize KS could go bad, can they? Anyone else have this issue? You guys recommend me just replacing it?

Also, i've heard that the LA3 is more sensitive to KS signals and that the early style intakes actually act as a megaphone and exaggerate the normal engine noise into false signals, true?

I goes i should get off my @$$ and just replace the intakes and KS!

One more thing, with my manual boost controler and boost set at 16ish sometimes even with full boost the engine doesn't seem to respond too much especially with added boost (18 psi). The air blowing through straw sound gets louder but the engine doesn't feel any torquier. This happens sometimes and sometimes it doesn't it on and off while boosting, power, slight bog, power. Timing issue? WTF is going on? I should mention it does it even with the KS unplugged.

Invest in 5 gallons of 100+ race gas and try it again. 91 octane and 18PSI with the KS disconnected will buy you... a cylinder head (but YOU have to pay for it!).

yep -- Pat is right- --

I do know that KS's can go bad --

BUT -- was your bad KS code left over from when you had the KS unplugged, or was it a actual bad KS --

I'd say clear the codes, and run it for a couple days, and check the codes again.

The KS can be very sensitive -- make sure you don't have other noises/rattles that are setting the KS off (like intercooler brackets)
