  • Adjustable Clutch Quadrant

I feel the need to replace my clutch cable and quadrant with something a little more "beefy" with some adjustability. I did a thorough search on the subject and came up with only one answer.

Motion Dynamics supposedly sells an adjustable clutch quadrant, however I could not find one on their site. Does anyone else make one specifically for the SVO? I'm not into "making a 5.0l quadrant work"...unless absolutely necessary.

This stock one is driving me nuts. I appreciate the help.

    quadrant

i would suggest that you get one with the 3 adjustment points. the single adjust is too large for the svo setup and leaves the clutch mushy and almost unadjustable(do to the diameter difference)
also get a firewall adjuster for the stock cable. both of mine are set up the same way and work fine. also almost unrecognizeable under all the hoses etc. even my comp prep car.

3-point? So you mean at the quadrant, on the firewall, and at the tranny, correct? Which brand would you recommend for the SVO? Would it be SVO specific? Can I still get a new SVO cable from Ford?

Sorry about all the questions. I'm a newb and I haven't been able to find all my answers through search or elsewhere.

        quadrant.

no. i mean the aluminun quadrant that goes under the dash. in order to use it you must remove all the plastic ford adjuster stuff. you see them pictured in most of the ford magazines. the fire wall adjuster is put on the fire wall after removing the gromet.
once you get the old adjuster off you will heve the cable loose-pull it out of the firewall gromet. remove the gromet. put the new firewall adjuster on the cable(be sure that the large adjuster threaded piece faces the engine compartment.stick the cable and adjuster back thu the fire wall and hook the cable to the new quadrant. i think that mine hooked to the second hook on the new quadrant.
then push the adjuster into the gromet hole.put the set screw in to keep it in line and start backing off the adjuster until you get the clutch freeplay where you want it.
it sounds complicated but when you get the 2 pieces you need it becomes very simple.

I used a 5.0L one. because the clutch cables are different between the 5/0L and SVO, get a design that uses the stock cable. mine is a simple aluminum quadrant and firewall adjuster. I've never had any problems with it. I can't remember the brand, bit it works great!!

I used the UPR type with the three hook-ups for the cable. It works great! Here is a link to their product (scroll down until you see the quadrant and firewall adjuster...bottom of this page). I would also suggest the firewall adjuster, but make sure you get one with a jam nut on it, or else it will loosen over time. These items are very reasonably priced ($60), and make for infinite adjustment of the clutch system.

I used the one from Mustangs Unlimited, but I had to use the SVO specific cable with it. This unit doesn't have the lock nut for the firewall adjuster and you need to figure out away to keep it from backing off. I used a little dab of silicone gasket maker.

Sac Mustang list an SVO specific quadrant and cable on there site:

                http://www.sacramento-mustang.com/cgi-bin/cart.pl?db|svo.dat|transmission

But if you don't need a new cable, then the other posted link above seems to be the most reasonable way to go.

Those look like very stout pieces for a nice price. Thanks for the link.

Now as far as the cable itself, I should just get a Ford unit? Went to the parts department today and it was priced at $190!! I know I can get it cheaper through a few connections, but I can't remember paying that much for my 5.0 clutch cable for my Mustang I owned previously.

                    quadrant

unless your present cable shows or exhibits signs of fatigue or excess ware dont
change it. to the best of my knowledge both mine 120k 7 96k are original and in very good condition with the use of a stock clutch the wear should be minimal.

                      Clutch Cable

My 221K 84 still has the original cable and I have no problems with it. Autozone sells a replacement cable for a lot less than the Ford cable costs: Pioneer CA-315 $44.99

I did not realize one could get that sort of mileage out of a stock clutch cable. Thanks for the info...you all saved me alot of time, money, and aggrevation.

to anyone still with a stock quadrant setup(i do for now, until i get some money) if you feel there needs to be a ton of pressure to push the clutch in, the teeth are worn on the pawl. it really sucks to have a cable break a half hour from home. THEN, less than 5,000 miles later you think it broke again. when the teeth grind all the way off, it feels like the thing bends sideways>>>>acts like a broken cable but theres a little resistance at first. when i first bought my first mustang>>>85 gt built, i thought that was the way it was supposed to feel. so i never gave it any thought that my cable would break at 145, 000 or so miles. the one piece quadrant is surprisingly girly light! doesnt take much pressure to push in. made the entire car feel different, i didnt have to throw the car into gear. i would highly recommend an adjustable cable/quadrant/firewall adjuster.

                            adjustable clutch

I just put one in my svo and it was a pain in the neck, I would recommended doing the change, I had a lot of trouble out of the three hooked one.

when i replaced the cable first, it took me and friend about 3 hours or so....................when i bought the quadrant, about 30 mins tops. take the drivers seat out......makes it a lot easier. and have a smallish flashlight thatll be able to stand on its own beside your head, or those "headlights"
