  • I'd take some tips now...

With the exception of an ignition module during our SVO reunion my car has run awesome these last 2 years.

Now... I have a perfect idle, great mileage, no missing out of boost. With boost it's started missing in the upper 4k range and it's coming down the rpm range steadily. Last nite it missed/backfired/bucked bad about 3200 when I floored it in 2nd.

I put on new Motorcraft plug wires a few days ago. No fixxy.

Just as a matter of tune, I'm going to do the Cap, button, plugs, and a Ford Ignition Module (rather than Advance).

I think this is a small time problem, anything I'm missing? Anyone want to point a finger at a suspicious part?

      Bud thanks.

I JUST ORDERED VIA FAX from my local Ford Parts (great guy):

      Plug Wires (next set)
      Plugs (one step colder)
      Distributor Cap
      Rotor Button
      PCV valve
      Ford Ignition Module

      anything else might be suspect?

Only 9k on timing belt, 1k on fuel filter and pump.

Well, I was going to say fuel filter until you pointed this out.

A few months back NY Eric and I were both having this problem past 4000 RPM. In his case it turned out to be a melted plug wire facilitated by a nice leak in his header. In my case it was just bad wire choice and not adhearing to the main ruel of thumb with 2.3's. OEM ignitions components only. Oh well, I've learned my lesson.

You seem to have that part of the equasion taken care of with your order. But if it does not solve the problem... Have you checked fuel preasure/FPR. If you can hook a gauge up temp to see what it's doing when the problem starts - it would rule out fuel if nothing else.

It sure sounds like an ignition problem to me. After you've gone through the secondary wiring and plugs, check the wiring to the TFI plug and other critical sensors and components. Your car is an 84 and they are notorious for wiring problems that cause exactly the symptoms you describe.

On my SVO, the biggest difference in performance after 17 years of ownership has been a new ignition coil. I used a MSD coil, and couldn't believe the difference...

ok guys I appreciate the input.

I'll do my tuneup Saturday, and see if I can get it back in it's prime.

It's had it's wiring problems I know, when I bought it the underhood harness was all unwrapped w/ 10 jillion wires running everywhere. I spent a month or so repairing all that. Really hate wiring so I hope it's not a bug somewhere.

I'll let you know. Thanks much.

I had something like that but much worst. The injectors driver went bad and killed the top of the rpm got worst and worst. Would sit and idle fine tho.
So many things can do that on these cars.
I got extra parts if you don't get a easy fix.
Its my turn to travel up there anyway.
Thanks again for the hand on the Tranny.

                    long shot

this is a long shot, but i had a similiar problem with a previous svo i owned. the voltage regulator is held on by screws in the area of the inner fender below the starter selinoid/drivers side.
if it is loose or has a bad ground to the body it will cause symptoms as you described. i had to remove mine/ redrill holes and remount it /cleaning the surfaces around the mounting holes to alleviate the problem. hope this helps. alan

Well that's what I was looking for, some of the non-standard things to check beyond the simple tuneup in case the tuneup didn't get it.

                      I appreciate it.

Did the full motorcraft tuneup, Plug #2 had jumped from .032 to .042 and looked white/crusty beat on, so I believe it was the offending part.

It's back to it's old tire roasting self.
