Well for the third time this year I'm having to take the gauge cluster out to lube the speedo with lithium grease. For some reason the speedometer turns noisey after a short time. Are there any suggestions on what to do? Is it time for replacement, or can it easily be taken apart and cleaned/lubed?
I had the same problems with my '87 Foxbody. The cable just became so old and crusty that the lube just didn't do anything for it, and I ended up replacing the cable. Cable replacement isn't the most fun job, but it isn't horribly difficult.
The inner cable can be replaced separately from the cable housing at a greatly reduced price and a lot less labor, since you don't have to remove the whole assembly. Auto Zone has them listed.
I have 2 gauge clusters for my 86 (one white faced, one stock) -- on the stock one, the speed-o sounds like scraping a knife against a stone, the other is quite as can be --
There is also a real scrience to getting the speedo cable installed correctly. Often the inner cable can be too long. Any speedo shop can help you out.
