  • griggs ball joint adaptor

i heard that griggs has a ball joint adaptor so you can use a svo spindle with a sn 95 lca is this true? also if you fully convert to sn 95 spindles ect what happens to the front wheel does in go inward or foward . i dont want the car to look funny after going through this i will be using stock wheels thanks to all that reply

As listed in the FS section on this board....

and this listed in the same forum section:

What is different is the spindle itself...the later SN95 spindles will increase the front track about 5 mm per side...the tie rods will be about 1 inch lower (for Modular motor clearance).

Do a search on www.corner-carvers.com and type in SVO SN95 spindles to find out more

A section I have saved from -the- cornercarvers post:

The big issue with the 96+ spindles compared to the earlier ones is that the tie rod attaching point is about 1" lower than on the 95 and earler cars. Look at the spindles on the 95 and compare them to the 98's. The tie rod "arm" is kinked up and the 96+ one is straight. They lowered the steering rack 1" in the 96+ cars to fit the 4.6. The end result on the earlier cars is that the later spindles can cause bump-steer issues

Just to save everyone else from having to do the math, here's the summary:

Using the '87 - '93 Fox GT as the baseline, the '94 - '95 SN-95 GT lower ball joint moved 20mm forward, 27mm outward, and 1mm down. The wheel center moved 17mm forward, 23mm outward, but is the same height. The outer tie rod end is moved 20mm forward, 41 mm outward, and 4mm up.

Comparing the '96+ SN-95 to the earlier '94 - '95 spindle, the lower ball joint moved 1mm rearward, 5mm inward, and 2mm down. The wheel center also moved 1mm rearward, but is the same width and height. The inner tie rod end is the same fore/aft and width, but moved down 28mm.

It's pretty easy to see the 5mm (0.20") width difference between the '94 - '95 and '96+ spindles here (the lower ball joint is 5mm inward on the newer spindle, meaning the wheel center would actually move outward 5mm when installed on an earlier vehicle).

One can also see that the '96+ spindle would require a 28mm (1.1") shorter bumpsteer spacer than the earlier piece.

The SVO ball joint has a larger diameter at the location of the taper than the SN95. The SN95 spindle has a smaller tapered hole than the SVO spindle. Can you imagine such an adapter? The inside diameter of the adapter would have to be larger than the outside diameter!

Since I'm looking at a set of these adapters as I type, I can't figure out why they wouldn't work...John Griggs told me they would work, since he used them on his own personal 84 SVO before converting to SN95 spindles and brakes...I mocked up the SVO spindle to an SN95 arm and it worked...hmmmmmmm

If you want to use an SN95 arm with the SVO spindle, these adapters will allow that to happen...if you want to use the SN95 spindle to a SVO arm, that won't work UNLESS you ream out the ball joint hole in the spindle to match the SVO ball joint, which is larger than an SN95

Nothing else, like the wheel going in, out, forward or backward would change, since the SN95 arm and the SVO arm are virtually the same, EXCEPT for the ball joint size.

You really need to check out the thread I started at Corner Carvers about this...

                I don't have a picture...get a copy of "Mustang Performance 2" by William Mathis...page 66 figure 4-3

The ball joint adapters should work with the Steeda Ball Joints...the question is whether or not the SVO brakes will work with the SN95 arm and Steeda ball joints...I bet it won't, as the rotor will hit the control arm...

Please check out the thread at www.corner-carvers.com search 'SVO sn95 spindle differences'.

i have read the post at corner-carvers its great . if i have to use regular ball joints then that will be fine. the car doesnt see alot of track time. my main focus is to get something on there that is replaceable. i am on my way to the book store right now to buy that book thanks
