  • cam choices - I need help?

I have tried to read all the comments on cams and have searched the net to the best of my capablities but I am still in the dark. I am currently having my 1984 rebuilt and the engine builder wants to know what I want to do about a cam. The stock cam is in could shape but since I autox about 30 times a year, I want to improve performance if I can. However, I can't seem to find what the stock specs are so how do I know if I'm even making any change or just wasting money (something I try not to do). I tried, to no avail, to find the 85.5 specs from a Ford dealer.
I'm only interested in sliders - again because I am only interested in results per $.
I must make a decision within the next few days so how about some input?
I need as wide a power band as possible. Low end torque is necessary but I routinely hit the rev limiter. I'm running 3.73 gears and will be moving to 4.10s. I've either done or doing many of the other mods for quicker spool up. Right now, the cam is my concern.

Thanks Mike for the info. I appreciate it. I guess I'll go with the Crane and see how it works.

I CAN'T MAKE UP MY MIND!!!

Maybe the white car, since my son offered to pop for the grey car's paint job if he gets to drive the grey car. Maybe the grey car until the white car gets back from D&D (the cam may get worn out by then) since it needs valve stem seals anyways. Maybe the other white car to compliment the downpipe. Maybe the red car if I stick an LA3 or PE in it with brown tops. Maybe NY eric's rent-a-racer for when he's in town.

Oh heck, I'll just call Engle and see if I can get my own fleet group purchase!

If I include my "fleet" I'll bet we'd qualify for a special production run of our own!

Since my new motor will be built for it and because I need it when I autox, I would like to be able to rev at little higher. Other than the maintaince issue is there some other reason why I shouldn't go with solid lifters with a corresponding cam.

Mike, you indicated that the Crane pulls to redline but in the reply that dvcrogers posted it states the following:

Recommended RPM range with matching components
                Minimum RPM 1500
                Maximum RPM 4500 ???????????
                Valve Float 6500

                How about it Mike?

I actually believe crane makes the flat tappet ford motorsport cam (M-6250-A234). if you look at Crane CCH-272 or H272 it has the same specs as the motorsport cam. It also has more duration and valve lift than the crane H270 so i think it would maybe give more horsepower in upper RPM ranges.

Well the A234 is the same specs as the FMS roller cam and a lot of people seem happy with that one.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the Engle 111? What about a custom grind from Schneider?
