  • Removing OLD masking tape

I was bumped from behind about 12 years ago and the repairs included new right tail light assembly and repainting the rear bumper cover. I thought it was a fine job done at a good Ford Bodyshop.
Yesterday I got a new tag and when I went to remove the old frame and plate I noticed a leftover piece of masking "between" the bumber and the body itself. See attached pic.
Does anybody have a hint on getting this off? Not much to grab to, and it is down between the actual seem of the cover and body.
I don't want to use a plate frame and without one the tape is very noticeable.

    Chris,

You might try some "Goo-be-gone" or similar. It is an orange peel based product. I'd spray some on and let soak, wiping up any overspray. You might want to test it on an inconspicuous painted surface first to make sure it doesn't damage your paint.

      Thanks Mike,
On an unrelated but exterior note...
My passenger side door molding "fell" off while it was in hibernation and I want to reattach it. The "parts guy" at Advanced suggested I buy (and did) 3M clear adhesive (red box, red and white tube). Although it appears the stripping was originally taped on, because that's what is still on the door. Should I find double sided tape? Ane if the adhesive is OK, should I peel the old tape off the door, or just glue the strip on top of the old tape.

try to get as much of the old doublesided tape off the moulding and car as possible, i would use the tape to put the moulding back on. the adhesive is messy and yellows with time. 3M makes good doublesided tape. Go down to your local body supply store and buy a roll. 3M uses a special alcohol based wipe to use before you apply the tape, so pick one of those up also. Do that and the moulding should never fall off again.

On the masking tape -- If the plate covers it up, I'd leave it -- just too much of a chance of pulling more than tape off.

Unfortunately, that is the problem. I used to have one of those plastic frames around the plate. Akind of wedge looking black plastic one that kept me from noticing it. I kind of wanted to get away from the frame look. I'm gonna think about this a couple of days.

                News Flash

                Great News
I found this stuff called "Label and Sticker Remover" (duhh) made by Dominion Sure Seal LTD. It's in a little spray can with little red tube "for accuracy".
Anyway, this stuff is perfect! I sprayed it on the exposed edge and waited a couple minutes, and the whole stupid piece of tape slid off like it was a wet decal on an AMT model! Even the part that was hidden under the bumper cover came along. And I'll never need this stuff again in my life. $2.99, plus shipping and handling, and it's your's !
Now... for the brake lines and drive shaft
