I have a 1985 4 cyl. turbo. Believe it is the first half of 85. I just finished rebuilding the engine and dropped her in.
I intend on selling it so I need to meet emissions here in MA.
Can anyone tell me the setup for the exhaust system? It came with 2 CATs off the car. The exhaust system that came with her was trashed. How many pcs. does this vehicle have for it's system?
Thx,
Bob

Well with that engine it tells me it is like the 84. 2.5 downpipe to a cat and 1 muffler exiting out the driver side. not real bad. if you were to keep the car go 3" it is real nice. but if you are selling it. the easiest way to do it is to get a sac mustang short downpipe. Into a 3" cat and then to a 3" in and 2.5 out muffler and get a driverside over the axel form any aftermarket set up for a fox body. and you are in good shape.

Thanks for the info. Just wonder if there were any with 2 CATs?
I never did ask the guy I bought it from. Perhaps he just had an extra one.
Thx again,
Bob

None of the SVO's had 2 cats.

I am new at this Mustang lingo. I asked my helper(in the picture)
and she didn't know either.
What do you mean by ( sac mustang downtube ) ? Does the CAT hang vertically or does the down tube come down and turn.
I was at NAPA and they can't find the setup in the book.
Thx for the help.

The term "downtube" refers to the piping that leads from the elbow at the end of the turbo down to the catalytic converter. Sacramento Mustang is a vendor that sells a 3" diameter down tube (larger than stock, less restrictive, more power) You can get one from Sacramento Mustang parts. It isn't in the Walker catalog. There are other vendors of similar downtubes or, you can have one custom made locally. You can see Sacramento Mustang's online catalog at:

Here is the original setup and walker makes most, if not all, of what you need.

Even though Bob's questions were covered .. I just had to comment. Did no one look at the picture of Bob's helper? I just find it strange that they guys who posted afterwards made no mention of "Her" ... EyeLaw ? GABoy?

BRAHAHAHAHAHAH ..... Bob, you wouldn't happen to have relatives in the Cleveland, OH area would you? With that sense of humor, I'm thinking your Gator's twin brother from a different Mother. Seriously. THAT was funny!

Good luck with your SVO. Get it together and running .. and be sure to attend the Reunion. Don't forget to buckle your helper in the passenger seat for the trip.

I was beginning to wonder if everyone on this site was that serious that you couldn't even joke. lol

We got about 30 plus cars going by this day that stopped to lend a helping hand.
Here is one.

Bud,

I was thinking she was one of those $5000 love dolls that I saw on HBO and didn't want to comment.

The last pic and story is hilarious. I can see myself stopping to give a hand.

No one has that stock downtube. Tried Walker, Sacramento, NAPA ect and the Dealer's.
I want it to pass emission's so i can't use the 3" .
At this point I will take a used one and patch it.

Any suggestion's?
Bob
I am going to go cry on my Helper's shoulder.

Naww, she looks like a trained professional to me.

Otherwise, why would she be wearing the Mechanix Wear work gloves? (OH, so nobody noticed the gloves!)

I just spoke with my friend who owns a Midas near me and he said he used to either stock, or could get that part easily. But he says HIS franchise switched suppliers and he cannot get one anymore. You might want to check with your local Midas, things might be different up there.

Wrong year. Outlet on opposite side of the driveshaft for a stock 85. Eric, we need to discuss making this a stocking item at our next board meeting! ;)

I will check Midas next. If not I will look for an old used one and bring it to the Muffler Man to bend one up.

Oh yeah She is a Pro. She's using a Snap On light also. Not your Home Depot special. She never complains either.

She's got that shiney tan!
I think I know her! Did she used to dry cars at Mr Wash?
On a related note.....
Am I to understand that these 3" down pipes do not accept an O2 sensor? And is there such a thing as a better flowing cat?

"Am I to understand that these 3" down pipes do not accept an O2 sensor?"

That's correct, but none of the stock exhaust pipes have fittings/holes for sensors either.

In the SVO & similar engines, the Oxygen sensor mounting is part of the turbocharger (in the outlet elbow off the turbine housing).

"guys who posted afterwards made no mention of "Her" ..."

I used to have a girlfriend similar to the one in that post. Though she dressed differently. I think I still have the clothes...

Bob,

In your first picture, you have all your brackets and pulleys painted. I know this is getting off the exhaust subject, but what color, brand, etc. of black paint did you use? I've found that the semi-gloss blacks are too flat, and the gloss blacks are too gloss. How did yours come out?

Bob,

I saw several 84/85 3" downpipes at Sacramento Mustang about a week ago.

HA! That second pic was funnier than the first one! I'm serious when I say, BOB YOU NEED TO BRING HER TO THE REUNION!!! If you have never seen the BizaroGator pics .. oh jeez, those were the only "G Rated" ones we could post!

BTW - I would suggest just having a local shop fab you an exhaust. a 3" Downpipe (aka 3" DP) will NOT affect emissions. It will, however, affect performance .. in a good way.

The paints I used were Color Palace, A semi flat black. It was a can I had been given from a truck driver that used to rent space from me I don't know where he got it. Rust-o-leum has a Semi Flat Black also but it is hard to find. One of the best Siler's I have found that I used building my Cobra Roadster engine is made by
Wurth and it is a Lacquer Spray Metallic Silver. That stuff is great.
One of the best paint out of a can short of say POR-15 is sold by Parts Associates 1-800-321-1128.
They have what is called Industrial Protective Coatings.
I used them on my old Triumph chopper motor casing's and they resist heat and chipping. Unlike regular can paint which has about 12 % solids/resins this coating has 36 %. It is great stuff and they will send you a catalog of colors. All kinds of colors.
If anyone has an old pipe I will buy it and have my own made up to the same configuration. I don't care if it is rusted out because I am only ising it as a template.
