Just out of curiosity, Was/is there anything wrong with the stock SVO mufflers (other than not being able to get them anymore)? I know that typically, stock mufflers are more restrictive but they were designed to work with the turbo motor system. Other than the downpipe, is there that much difference between a stock SVO exhaust system and say a 2-1/2" mac cat back system?
Are you certain that the two mufflers are SVO specific? (I'm not)
One other interesting thing that I have noticed on my 85.5 is that one original muffler is 4 or 5 inches longer than the other. What's up with that? It makes me consider that there were 5.0 parts already available to work in to the package.
It looks like we'll have lots of things to discuss on the Knott's weekend!
One would assume that the 5.0 exhaust flows enough for a 2.3 motor - albeit a turbo motor. I'm sure the Ford engineers worked on that one.
Is there anyone that can tell me - Other than the downpipe & cat, is there than much difference between a stock SVO exhaust system and say a 2-1/2" mac cat back system? For a 1986 SVO with duals.
There was a thread just about a week ago on mufflers, and you can walk into NAPA and buy them.
Search for that thread to get the name of the mufflers used, I can't remember it off the top of my head.
I went from a stock dual setup -- to the mac 2.5 " cat back.
I have no dyno proof numbers, but I could tell a difference in how the car ran after the swap.
Pat,
You re right. My 85.5 mufflers were different lengths, and when I needed a new system I couldn't find a Ford one. So I got 2-chamber FlowMasters and a Midas Y pipe. Then I had my friend who owns a Midas shop weld up a nice system.
It sounds and runs sweet!
Chris
Walker still makes the stock stuff for the '86 SVO. But the new Dynomax & Mac stuff with mandrel bends as opposed to the crimped originals will flow better. More flow, more go.
You can get the Dynomax stuff with mandrel bends in the original 2 1/4" diameter. Mustangs Unlimited has either setup listed on the website.

I searched, but could not find anything. My reason for this post is that I do have a NOS exhaust system, down to the last nut, hanger, and mounting band. I want to install it to make the car look original, but if the performance suffers tremendously, I want to think about an original look aftermarket system that will provide me with added performance.
The Walker info is good - I think that if you can get tail pipes that look OEM, it's a good thing.
My thoughts on the exhaust are -- the downpipe and cat are the most restrictive areas. replacing those don't take away from the stock look.
A 3 inch all the way back is probably the best setup, -- you could still put the 84 style dual chrome tip on a 3 " tailpipe, and look stock, unless someone looked under the car.
