  • altenator hook up?

Ok, I didn't jot down how the wires came off my altenator when I disassembled the top end. I know the larger guage is for the battery lead, what about the field and ground leads? I am assuming the ground lead is the one I can get 12v from with a voltmeter and touching the positve terminal on the battery? This lead has a black cap.

Brain fart? I know you meant negative ground.

Pat, so the ground wire for the altenator is the one that will give me 12v with my voltmeter between the pos term on the battery and this wire that I am assuming is ground?

Thanks Mike, now I am trying to figure out just what wire goes where. I have the larger wire figured out, but what about the other two wires? The altenator has two stamps on it above the terminals that read "ground" (fully agree with your statment regarding actual ground) and "field". The two wires from the harness have one red and one black rubber caps on them. Help, I would like to crank this baby tommorrow.

Good info Mike, but which wire on the harness is the "field" wire? Sorry for being a pain with this, maybe you have already explained this and I just don't understand.

there are 3 wires --- the big one bolts on --

the other 2 are the slip on --
as I remember -- they are different sizes, and won't go on the wrong posts.
