ok in my haynes manual, to remove the dash, the book says disconnect the speedometer cable. i found 2 small bolts that hold the gauge to the rest of the housing from the back of the housing. there is a white clip around the cable about an inch from the base. how in the $^*&)()*^%#$ hell do i get the cable disconnected. i am truly dreading the day that i have to put those tiny screws back in. please help.

The two screws are truly dreading that day as well.

Just jiggle that white cable housing end till it pops off. Be careful with the cluster harness connectors.

I cant remeber if its a real good sqeeze on the tabs or you pry them...gently and wiggle it off the back of the cluster. Lemme me look at my spare cluster tomorrow(the cable was cut and that piece was left on it.)

Reach up through the bottom of the dash and follow the speedo cable to the back of the speedo. There is a white clip on the back of the cable that holds it onto the back of the speedo. Squeeze the fingers of the clip at the FRONTof the cllip, closest to the speedo to compress it (NOT the back of the clip closest to the cable) and pull the cable away from the speedo at the same time. The cable should come loose.

Yep, squeeze the tabs. Sometime the plastic is real hard, I've used a pair of side cutters and GENTLY squeezed to get the bugger off. Nope not runnin' yet. Gonna tinker today.

Squeezing the clip and pulling away from you should definitely get it. It's one of those "couldn't figure it out the first time, but once you've done it once, you'll never forget" things...

those screws don't hold the cable in, they are part of the speed-o

once you squeeze those tabs, wiggle left, right, up, and down, the cable will pop off. -- You will most likely scratch the crap out of your hands along the way.

i was trying to squeeze the tabs. dint seem to make sense.......seemed like that technique would clamp it on tighter. i put my pliars down and grabbed the cable and pulled out to get more room, and the gauge cluster gave when i did that. but i got it. hopefully i can find all of the wires that go to the starter solenoid and the fuel pump, and make the car run.
