  • how loud is a dumped exhaust?

Right now I have a stock exhaust with no mufflers, and I'm considering a full 3" with a Magnaflow and no cat, dumped in front of the axle. Do you think this will be louder than the current system? Or maybe just have a bad or annoying tone? Also, is there any downside to dumping the exhaust before the axle other than noise (corroding parts, giving rear seat passengers brain damage, etc)? I feel like I've asked this before but I couldn't find the thread.

Friend of mine has a large Magnaflow dumped just in front of the passenger side axle on his 2.3 turbo Mustang. Standing behind the car, it isn't really all that loud at all.

Of course you run into the usual carbon monoxide entering the car while in traffic issue. The interior of my '87 with a 306 with dumps also reeked of gas/exhaust.

Despite my past experience with dumps, I'm going to give it a shot with the SVO. Worse comes to worse you can always weld on a tail pipe.

      Dumped......

Seen it, heard it......Louder under throttle & some fumes in the cab if dumped underneath....At least out the side is not that much further.....Turbo acts like a muff in itself.....

If you swing by my place I'll open up my cutout and take you for a ride...it's about 3 feet forward of the muffler but you'll get the idea.

If you're interested hit me up on MSN.

Ya might want to check with your State if it's even legal. I'm pretty sure it's a standard in all, but 'dumps' aren't legal here in Georgia. If you're interested in seeing the law written for it here in Georgia, click here

          (3) The exhaust emission point shall extend beyond the rear or outside of the passenger compartment. The trunk shall be considered as part of the passenger compartment

It's done for safety reasons. Don't want someone passing out from inhaled exhaust fumes .. and rolling into an intersection.

Kansas doesn't care...even if there is a law against it...which I don't think there is. You DO have to have a muffler though (but they still don't pull you over unless there is another reason to do so).

Stinger - You an expert in Kansas State motor vehicle law now?

sar4497 - do yourself a favor before you install something of this nature on your vehicle. Like, if it's allowed and the cost of the violation if it's not. Can you afford to be wrong because you listened to someone else's speculation and didn't research the facts for yourself?

No, never claimed I was...I was just stating the fact that they do not check for that stuff here. They don't even care if we have a cat or not. No sniffer or visual inspections, etc. As I stated, "Kansas doesn't care...even if there is a law against it". That doesn't say it's not against the law does it?

All it takes is one officer that does care, and WHAM -- $500 (or more) fine --

how would you feel if that happened to someone you just gave advice ?

It's good advice, but... I'm not worried one bit about any legal issues on my car.

That's good advice also, but I wouldn't have typed it if I had any legitimate reason to be worried about anything.

Back towards the actual topic... Does anyone run a side exit in front of the rear tire? That's another consideration but I don't want to mess up the rear wheel.

I ran across a guy near Fresno, CA. Andrew is his name and goes by the handle Yellowltd. Nice guy. He has an 86 SVO that somebody had equipped with a 3.5" single exhaust that dumps to the side just in front of the passenger rear wheel. The car has passed CA smog, but is loud and obnoxious. It sounds like a snowblower on steroids! He thinks so too and would like to change it, but cannot afford to at this time.

                          I'll add my $.02

My 84 has the stock DP & cat and no muffler with a dump before the rear axel. Its defiently louder than stock. I personally find it amusing. Its loud, but not fart muffer loud that increases with RPM and not nearly as raspy. I've driven by "the man" on multiple occasions and even been pulled over 2x (once for mistaken identity and 2nd for driving w parking lights on ) and neither time was the noise an issue.

Ideally I'd like a 3" DP, 3"cat and 3" bullet muffler and then 3" over the axel.

I just passed smog with my current configuration too.

                          Ymmv,
