  • Break-in and misc.

Well, the 84 is once again alive; sort of. I just got it back from the shop about 2 weeks ago and had a couple of items to sort out before driving it. I got the 255 Walbro installed Saturday and the FMS valve cover installed yesterday.

The rebuild consisted of .30 over with custom Arias forged pistons, a237 cam and cam sprocket, .50 trim to4e and a lightly ported/polished head. I somehow dicked up the sender when changing the pump, but that's not really my concern right now.

My main question is about the "break in" period for the new engine. I drove it about 20 miles yesterday and it seems to run ok. I didn't really get in to the boost too much and I have the wastegate set at 9 lbs. right now. I did notice, however, that when I did get in to the boost it would spit out some black smoke from the tailpipe. Is this normal and what are your recommendations for properly breaking in the motor? This new turbo doesn't really spool until about 3000 rpms and hits full (9 right now) at about 3400. Is that normal?

One final note, and I'm sure you all know this, but the instructions I had for the pump install mentioned replacing the resistor wire with a normal wire. Call me stupid, but I unwrapped the harness from the plug to the "junction" before I figured out that all you need to do is remove the resistor splice and ground the plug to the chassis. Big time saver. I also had to rig the pump bracket as the 84/85 bracket won't hold the large pump. I had a bracket from a 87 Mustang to use. Only AFTER I had the tank reassembled and ready to mount did I realize that the bracket fuel feed line is larger diameter than the stock bracket. I was pissed to say the least. I resorted to cutting off the stock feed line and using high pressure hose and clamps to "rig" a connection. So far no leaks.

    TIA,

    Chris
